  • I changed distributor's. The little turd is doing the same thing again after I unplugged the round plug in by the distributor. Its got a new coil wire but I'm going to try that tomorrow. Other than that I don't know where to go. Yesterday it came out of it and I dove to town and back and today I couldn't even get it out of the yard. I think it's starving for gas but I am not 100% certain of that but all the indicators say that. It doesn't load up on gas ever. It's a real pain. Could the brain be causing this and would plugging it into a code reader possibly help. I just thought of something, I have never taken a battery cable off when it has acted up to see if when it reprograms itself it might snap out of it. I'll try that tomorrow too. Thanks!

    • So here I am running along like nothing is wrong but I don't dare go anywhere very far or at night because it is an absolute certainty that it will all of a sudden start to couph and miss and then not run except at an idle and I will have to get towed home. I guess I'm going to sell it like it is and tell the person that it acts up sometimes and he will no doubt think he can find the problem. Maybe he can. It is deffinitly something that can be found but we sure haven't been able to find it. How is yours running rpickle?

          • rpickle, why don't you give me a shot at it. I'm an old pro myself. I think I can find your problem unless it's the same exact problem as mine. I have lived by the motto "never say die" for a long long time although sometimes we got to throw in the towel.(that's an old fight saying) if two guys were beating there brains out or if one was getting beat beyond recognition and wouldn't quit and the referee wasn't stopping the fight the fighters ring man or manager in the corner could throw a towel into the ring and stop the fight! He was usually coming into the ring himself anyway after he had thrown the towel in to help his guy or at least stop the massacre so there was no way to keep going anyway.

              • I finally changed carboraters and everything seems to be good. I'll know in a few days if it's fixed or not. It's running good again!

                • The spacer and gaskets on the fuel pump might be your problem rpickle. If the pump is to close it will work but not at full pump and can somertimes loose it's prime. When it is spaced properly it pumps fully with each turn of the cam.

                  • Hi TOm. I just got another carb from mattswab. It appears to have fixed me up too. I still need to do some work on it, but my problem has changed. Going to suck some Sea Foam up in thru the vac lines. Also now have a brake issue to work on.

                    Hmm, never ends....

                    Glad you got yours going.

                      • It's interesting, the fuel pump. When a gasket or spacer is left off when installing the fuel pump is closer to the camshaft lobe. The pump lever pumps a shorter pump that it does when it pumps at the end of the pump lever instead of slightly inward from the end. A little bit makes a lot of differance here. It is unable to pump fully and can go bad or sometimes lose it's pump prime by pumping to short a stroke. Hence runs good sometimes and at other times doesn't.

                        • I can't figure out how to stop this new carb from a very high idle. To high to drive the car! I thought it would just be a simple fix to do with the linkage but I can't unriddle the problem. It's not the expunger or the idle set on the passenger side. It's not the chock, that lets loose. It worked good on the other car. It's not the throttle linkage, it is loose. It just won't go all the way down like it should. I have sprayed it with Sea Foam and worked the linkage a bunch of times. Everything seems good but I can't find a way to idle it down.

                          • My "new" carb will not hold idle. Runs fine, just when I let off the throttle, it idles down and stalls.
Took the car out for a 40 mile round-trip! Woo-who. First time out of the neighborhood since March....
I still need to bleed the brakes. Found my leak... ops: When I installed the new gas tank, I had to move a line around. I didn't tighten it all the way.
Also need to replace the hose that comes up behind the carb from the exhaust. It is noisy and sticks.

Oh, I will change the oil shortly..

                            Later.

                              • Hi Karl. Appreciate it. I hope to be bringing back the fuel pump I borrowed.

Right now I don't think I need anything.
