  • Wren trap

I caught this Carolina wren ( I call them house wrens ) in a mouse trap today. Cool amusing little birds with a big song. They spend more time on the ground under things then they do anywhere else. A pair were living in my parts festiva until I took the hatch and doors off. They would come and go where a taillight was missing. They raised a fuss when they returned the day I took the doors and hatch off. Any time I open the garage they will fly in. Ive even had them somehow crawl in when the doors were closed and Ive had the wood stove going. They have actually landed in my lap while I'm sitting by the stove. Cute as heck. I could tell a lot of stories about them. Any way this one was doing what they do, crawling under stuff, and found a mouse trap I keep in the shed. I released it unharmed. As soon as I lifted the bar it stood on my knee for a couple of seconds then took off no worst for wear. It was lucky the trap just caught its leg.

Im suprised it didnt break its leg. Those traps are made to break the mouses neck when it snaps. I get at least 1 mouse a night up here at my house in the woods. It sucks when I forget to check the trap for a couple of days because they start to stink.

Here are a couple of old pics of a winter day when they came in to get warm by the stove. Its hard to see but one is on my boot and one is on the wifes head. They would get in the wheelbarrow full of fire wood and crawl down to the bottom looking for insects. Id have to scare them out so I could get some wood out without a shifting log crushing them.

Ive got electric heat in the house. Its OK but you cant really cozy up to it like you can a wood stove. I spend a lot of time in the garage in the winter. I think we were watching a football game that day too. And yes, I do love my festies . :love5:

That little garage there is only 24' X 24' with a bump out for the pit. Its plenty big enough though if you park festivas in it. My main shed is 32' X 60' but its too much to heat in the winter, besides its full of festivas.

My grandpa's deer camp has wood heat. I hate being on wood duty for the night.

I did fall asleep one night and burnt the heel of my shoe. That stunk the whole place up.
