too rusty for BP?

This is my 88 LX that I was going to swap the BP into. It is rusty on the frame rails. I also know it's more work to swap into a carbed festy. I'm just looking for opinions. Should I search for an efi festiva and just sell this one. I know it's nothing compared to the Wisonson/Michigan/Saskatchewan rust, but in VA I've had only 2 rusty festivas. This one and an Ohio rust bucket. Here is the story on the festiva in these pics.

Thats all not that bad....any local paint shops to give you a spray under coat? The local Rhino Lining franchise sprays an encapsulating coat prior to undercoating...it does not stop it rusting from the inside out but does help alot.

I wish it was my garage. My buddy rents it with another guy. I am in good with them. This morning I was in there from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. by myself with all the snap on tools and 2 lifts. I respect them and their tools and time. I picked up the key so I could part out the escort GT for my swap.

inless its really rotten and soft... dont worry about it. from the pix it looks like surface rust. Just pick up a can of undercoating (3-4$) and coat the rails and your good.

I was right with you until I saw that last picture. Looks nearly rusted through to me.

that's how Fester looked. Didn't look bad initially, but those frame rails are multi-layered. I found worse rust on the inner layers. I bent-up new 14ga sheetmetal rails and welded them in. Had to burn out the pitch/tar betwen the layers of the frame rails first to get a good bead.

It looks better than any of the festivas I have had. You should ask IdealSociety if that rust is bad. But for this area, that car is 99% rust free. I would use it with out a second thought.

It's just a case of this is the rustiest Virginia Festiva I've ever seen. Nobody has chimed in on the carbed car challenges. Any thoughts there? Or is it just the fuel pump. I have another festiva. It's a 91, but it has air and I really want to keep it as a cheap dd with air. I do score them on a semi regular basis. I guess I average one every 3 - 4 months. I have another lined up but it's carbed too. Decisions decisions.

I'd do it, its only a shell, if it turns out too bad just swap the engine of to another shell!

as far as carb'd, since youve got the escort harness it shouldn't matter too much. just swap the escort harness over and then add a in-line fuel pump. I'm sure someone who has done this will be able to chime in a bit more but it doesn't seem like it should be all that rough.

how would you feel if you put the engine in, and then score a
perfect efi model? if you arent in a hurry and come across them
pretty often id probably wait awhile. but certainly for a midwest
car, that not bad rust at all.
