  • Here's how I spent my day

I spent the day starting the baby's room. It needs a total demo and rebuild. Here's some before and after some demo pics:

Must be an older house, judging from the lath and plaster; what year was it built?
If it has boobs or wheels, sooner or later you're going to have trouble with it.

Looks like fun. Any mold? If there is, get it now. Also, I hope you have the room sealed off from the rest of the house. Mold spores can travel on the breeze with the dust.

No issues with mod and no itch from the insulation. The house was built in 1905. The reason for the full demo is that more than half the plaster was loose. The paneling and the wallpaper was holding everything together. I got more of it off today and should have the rest off tonight.

Then some insulation, wiring and drywall.

OH GAWD! Pig hair and plaster mix on 1 inch slats! Gad that brings back awful memories of the house I grew up in. I dont envy you for having to deal with that ****! Imagine gutting a whole house of that crap.

Matt that is absolute bravery on your part. Congrat, and good luck on the reno. I can't say I envy you the job, but I am sure it will turn out well for you.

We had a house built in 1908 that was plaster and lathe, and probably cardboard insulation too. Lived in it for about 14 years before caving in and buying a house built in 1982. We miss the features of the old house, the look, the woodwork, the style, but man is it nice to work on a house that is more or less straight, and has fixtures and wiring that can be purchased in a store when it needs replacing. Its nice when the -30 days don't make you feel like you need to stay 3 feet away from the walls too.

Ahh, I love the smell of demo in the morning. Probably best you got it all out anyway, what with old paint and all...looks like you get to have LOTS of fun!! You said there was no mold, but just in case..and for all who look on, you can use a dilution of water and white vinegar to get rid of it. I used to do mold remediation...I even did my time after Katrina...now THAT was mold! Good luck with the refurb!

I tore all the plaster & lath ceilings (and some of the walls) out of my last house. What a pain... carried it all out myself in a trash can too.
