I stop for turtles all the time, rescued two out of the road today but I found just as many run down, even on the shoulder.

Tells me people go out of their way to hit them.

I love turtles, especially the Teenage Mutant Ninja ones! Saw the first film in boot camp during one of our first passes. One of the guys in my platoon just had to see it! We all liked it.

I moved a box turtle from a west side street in Cowlumbus here last summer. It was probably some pet that got loose. I put it on the grass just off the roadway.

Lots of wildlife here too. This Spring I have already seen two kinds of snakes in my backyard, lots of various bird species. I have a bird house that has baby birds in it right now, there are lots of baby rabbits and adults in my back and front yard. Plus there are Elk wondering around nearby.

Someone should start a "Local Wildlife" picture thread.

Gidday lads. In Paul's neck of the woods that particular critter would be known as an Eastern Box Turtle (Terrepene carolina) and because of the colour of the eyes and forelegs it is a male of the species. And that one is quite large meaning it is 50+ years old.

Cool Jay! I am about to post a bunch of pics from my camping trip. When we were leaving I took some pics of a tiny mantis about that size.

Noticed this guy crossing the yard today. He is about two foot long from the tip of his tail to his nose with his head tucked in.

Freshtiva; what you got there is a Common Snapping Turtle. They get fairly big (50 lbs) and they ain't afraid to remove your fingers but what you really have to come across some day is an Alligator Snapping Turtle which looks similar but can tip the scales at 200 lb.

GenevaDirt; The tub enclosed turtle of yours is an Eastern Painted Turtle. The excessively long front claws identify it as a male of the species.
