within the last 6 months to a year I've gained a lot of respect for spiders design (like movement through basic hydraulics, etc) and that only a few spiders should really be feared for their venomous bites. The black widow and brown recluse are two extremely serious and venomous spiders. The brown widow, AFAIK, only has like 10% the strength venom as the black widow but still venomous for sure.

tonight...tonight I caught FOUR black widows!!

I happened to be walking out to look for one of the garden orb weavers (like pictured above in the thread) out by where we park our cars and it was gone. And I saw a small spider...and it's front legs were raised above the plane its body was parallel to on its web. something just didn't seem right. Got closer and I knew right away what I was dealing with. Happened to keep going around the house and found two more. and one was ON THE FRONT PORCH! WOAH. lol Got kind of gutsy and got a big cup and caught them. In the process of messing with the third baby stuff starts moving crazy and out comes mama female BW!! I thought it was getting attacked. I did not expect that. I had to smoke it out with some brake parts cleaner after about 30 minutes of digging. Tomorrow night I'll check inside my basement at a couple spots I know of for any...might go buy some expandable foam before I check.

edit>> didn't know this. I thought the little ones were babies. nope...males. And it makes more sense because the chelicerae (covers the fangs) on those males are HUGE! scary...

I get brown widows and black widows all the time in my garage. I live pretty much in the city but my house is basically in the boonies as everyone says. I pretty much leave the spiders alone though as they have never bothered me. Mostly they are just in the garage where I am not bothered by them. Even though I work for a chemical company and could kill them all instantly, lol.

lol. They're still in the cup. you want them willie? jk

I'm interested to see if the female will eat the males!! LOL I'm not planning to keep them around anyway. poor souls.

and collector, no way would I let black widows live in my garage knowingly. That's why I went all RECON on em. I didn't even know about the mama and she's right next to my garage. A female black widow built a web under my fuel filter (efi) and I had to run a brake line through there. *shudders* Even using some latex gloves to break that web down even when she was dead driving around with me you never know if there's more!!!

It'll be my fault if some normal spider bites me from messing around with it. But I'll never handle a widow or recluse. Dare I see a recluse idk what I'd do. They freak me out at the thought of a bite. I have had several jumping spiders lately jumping around me or on me. Arty would have been happy to be here. Those jumping spiders are really gorgeous!!

Recluse ( fiddlebacks ) are common around here. They seem to peak June through Aug. They can live for 10 years. I keep dozens of glue traps around to help control them, Ive seen the damage they can do.

My wife cared for a patient with a recluse bite. He had the typical necrosis, the chunk of missing leg meat, and then about 2 years later after many health struggles dude DIED.

Good morning Fresh, your right about the damage they can do, my son was biten by a Brown Recluse back in the early 90's he had been moving a pile of fire wood, the spider had crawled onto his arm and under his glove, it was while he was washing up that he noticed a Red spot on his wrist, a few days later when the Macho wore off he went to the hospital, they gave him some kind of antibiotic mix and drew lines where the Red infection was coursing up his arm, then sent him to Iowa City by ambulance, by the time he reached the hospital the poison had moved another 1/2 inch, to make the story short, the doctors took one look at the wound and called a hospital in K.C. a little while latter he was given a shot to counter act the bite. By the time the shot took hold, the doctors were ready to take his arm off and at that point the bite on his wrist had grown to 3/4 inch tall, looked like a Volcano and at the top in the middle of the bite, very visable, were the two puncture marks from the spider. He was only hours from loosing his arm to protect his life.
An idea can turn to dust or magic, depending on the talent that rubs against it.

june through august. I'll keep that in mind.

they're supposed to be around on the east coast but I've never seen one that I know of.

I wonder if you could let off bug bombs to cut them down during that time...

^^^ The only way to get rid of the Brown Recluse, is to bomb the house! (bug bomb, that is!) I had a raging infestation a few years back. Couldnt get rid of them by spraying. Unlike most spiders that like damp, action packed places to live, the Recluse like it quiet and dry. One place they are often found is in closets, and drawers. (yep, right in your underwear and socks!)
One of the reasons they are so hard to get rid of.
I fought the little PITA's for years. Got 2 Recluse bites over the years. The last straw was when sleeping one night, 2, not 1, but 2 ran over my face like an hour apart. The next weekend, I sprayed, then gathered up the pets, kids, dishes...etc. and set off 12 bug bombs in the house. Next day I sprayed again to kill off any wanderer's. Been Recluse free for 5 years now.
Though I did see one about a month ago, in the shower stall.
The Recluse cant stick to tub/shower (slick) walls like other spiders can.

A trip to a hardware store for more bombs is needed. I dont want them to get a foothold in the house again.

Oh yeah, BTW - Geneva....dont read this post! LOL....
