    @ John:

I was looking into waste oil burners, but figure i could only accumulate enough oil to heat during the winter if i did lube jobs on big rigs. Some of the units burn as little as .6 gallons and hour. The one we have down in our ridgedale shop goes through 8 an hour :O

    @ Marcus:

Exit 70 off 44 on the westwide of Springfield.

That's really cool! I dig the shop and can't wait to see what kind of house you'll build.

Consider geo-thermal heating and cooling when you build and just factor it into the loan. Lots of government tax breaks and they're around 500% more efficient than a natural gas furnace.

What about an outside wood burning water heater for the house hot water and to heat the garage with? They have radiators with a forced air fan to circulate heat into your shop.

Agreed, they can burn a lot of fuel to keep a place warm in the dead of winter.
But a programable thermostat to reduce the temp when your not there, and good insulation in the ceiling and walls can make a huge difference in the amount of fuel used.
Also, as previously mentioned, they can burn more than crankcase oil.
Transmission fluid and hydrualic fluid are also fairly available.
Also wonder about your access to fluids via a salvage yard.
Even if you only get 1/2 to 2/3 of your heating fuel via waste oils and had to pay for heating oil for the rest I'll bet you'd come out ahead vs propane.

Also, I collect wate oil from friends and family, some of them on this very board.
Big cost is the waste oil burner itself.

Great Idea, I have a Central air conditioner w/Heat pump option & it keeps my 14X70 mobilehome Warm most of the winter. However, when outside temp drops down to about 15 Degrees then I have to switch over to Furnace Heat strips but definately saves money.

Heat pumps are similar, but still compress refrigerant to move heat. A less efficient option.

Geo thermal systems utilize the stable temperature of the ground 6-10 feet down (about 59 degrees here in Michigan, year round) to heat and cool your home. Their best asset is cooling in the summer, but heating and cooling are nearly free compared to any other option.

We are not single together, we are single separately.

Note: the above is for the suggestion, not for the fact that we don't live together.

Well it's been awhile and i have been busy at work and working on this place.

                                update pictures:

Had to put up the fence to keep theives out, also installed osb board 4 foot high with plans to double insulate. Burning the blue trailer in the next couple weeks, along with the pile of wood behind it. I purchased new siding for the place, and all the carpet has been removed.
