Charlie, is that red biplane a Stearman?
Also, what is the last plane? Looks like an A6M5 cowl and prop, but the rest of it doesn't. Russian star markings and "Russian-looking" tail. It's not a Yak, is it?

"P" = "patrol" later changed to "F" = "fighter."
PB = patrol bomber,
PBY being patrol bomber, Consolidated ("Y" = Consolidated company).
Y could also be "experimental" but I think that came later. "X" was or became experimental...
And IIRC, the Army Air Corps and the Navy had their own designation systems, which also later changed.
Just old arcane knowledge leaking out.
