That looks like a truck accident... Jeez, I'm glad there was nobody in the passenger seat. I'm with NOS-tiva; I'm now a serious advocate of roll-cages in Festivas. To look at it, you'd think it was around an 80mph combined impact, (which means the two cars were only at 40mph during the collision) but in reality I'd say that could've happened at 40mph if the car got hit by (a bird) a good sized truck. In love with a MadScientist!:thumbright:
There's a fine line between breathtaking ingenuity and "That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen!"

The collision thing is correct though. According to Newton's third law. You can only impart as much force on an object as it imparts on you, or vise versa. So when you punch a kleenex, even if you're the Italian Stallion, you can only give it as much force as is equivalent to its resistive force, in this case, its inertia because it is stationary.Owner of:

Impact energies combine in a head-on collision. Momentum is mass x velocity. Impact energy would be momentum plus momentum minus the dissipation of any built in crumble zones.
This Festiva did not hit another vehicle, though. It hit an 8" diameter steel pole. The pole was thick walled and set very rigidly. The pole did not shear or fall over the car after impact.
You can see the first point of impact on the plastic bumper skin, just to the center of the passenger side turn signal. It looks like a 2" wide crease. The second visible point of impact was the leading edge of the hood. See the perfect imprint of the pole. This tells us it was not a wood pole.
The pole did not drop on the car. It may have been bent. My guesstimate is that the Festiva was going about 35 mph. If the pole had a concrete base, the base was not tall enough to hit the front bumper.
The Festiva partially 'orbited' the pole, meaning it spun around (in a clockwise) rotation. The steering wheel is not 'broke away', this tells us the driver was wearing his/her seat belt. The driver probably walked away from this one. The absence of blood tells us there was no passenger, the passenger would have probably been killed.
