  • 24 hours of LeMons project car

So someone on this site pointed me toward information for a road race in N. California for cars that are bought, built, and race prepped for $500.00 or less. I showed it to a few buddies in the WSU engineering department and we have decided to field a team for the '08 24 hour of LeMons in Tracy, Ca.
Because racing isn't just for rich idiots... it's for all idiots.

After reading the rules we found that the only things that werent included in the $500.00 budget were safety items (cage, tires, brakes, helmets, etc). So, we needed a cheap car that we could build and prep for $500.00...good thing I had 3 Festivas in the shop...lol

So as it turns out, the Festiva (named Rupert) we originally bought as a parts car is now the only Festiva that runs. We have decided to use a 1.6L B6 engine out of a 1988 Mazda 323 (82 bhp). My teamates found a nice one at a junk yard on Friday for $135.00. We will be doing extensive headwork and fitting with some small bore motorcycle carbs. When finished the engine should yield us a massive 100+ bhp. As you can see in the pictures below the work has already begun and I will update as progress continues.

Some of the rules of this event kinda scare me. Here are a few examples from their website:

1.4: Claiming Race: At the end of the competition, organizer may elect to purchase any vehicle from its owner(s) for $500. In other words, don't spend a lot on a cheater—cause if you do, you ain't gonna own it much longer.

1.6: Your Car May Be Destroyed At Any Time: In addition to accidents and other unfortunate boo-boos, one car may be selected by blind ballot of all registered participants for immediate removal and total destruction. It could be your car. It probably WILL BE your car. Them's the breaks. Don't bring it if you ain't OK with losing it.

On top of that is the $500 entry fee per car and $100 per driver. Anyway, good luck and have a good time.

That race sounds like fun. The different challenges look like a blast too (nothing a Festiva can't handle!)

My boss has a POS Corolla sitting in his back yard; I may buy it for the sole purpose of entering in this race and destroying it...

That bumper looks sweet, may have try that so it dont look like a truck.

Yeah i really dont like coping ideas (specially when it comes to looks) but that seriously adds an agressive look. well, you get what i am saying lol.
