  • auto trans choices...

been looking at the 93 mx-3 auto trans for my girls aspire, wondering 2 things:

what's the spline count comming out of the tranny

what other cars have this trans

i'm looking spcifically at the 93 because (acording to mitchell) that's the only year that has electronic control, a TCC, AND a seperate TCU. and that means less of a wiring job for me.

    any ideas?

i know the KL-ZE won't fit and the aspire is going to retain it's B3 so...

The 93 mx 3 has a b6? If so it might fit. How much more does the mx3 trans weight? Sorry don't know about the other info you need.

From what I understand, that automatic is alot bigger than what is in the festiva, and it more than likely won't fit with out modifying the frame rail on the festiva. There has not been a successful recorded automatic transmission swap in a festiva. I haven't heard of one that was even tried. Another option for a tranny would be one out of an 80's 323. I am not sure how they are controlled though.

well my main focus is to install a 4 spd trans with a TCC, and i know the mx3 had a B6 option with that trans so it should bolt up. also i know there is slightly MORE room in the aspire engine bay, so mods for clearance should be minimal.

now if the 323 trans is a 4 speed w/ TCC that gives me another option and another resource to pull from if i can't find an MX3.

noname, i see you have an MX-3. if you could do me a favor and ask around in the MX forums you frequent about my questions, i'd apreciate it very much. i don't want to invest too much $$ into this without having the appropriate information ( i know you can understand this). plus if this becomes a sucessful attempt, there will be another option for turbo festy drag cars (stronger trans).

The axles are the same axles used for the manual transmission. On the mx-3, that is an inboard spline count of 24, with an outboard of 26. The outboard won't fit in the hubs though. The 323 automatic transmission also uses the same axles as the manual transmission. Inboard spline count of 24 and an outboard spline count of 24. These axles would work in the festiva, but you might need the mx-3 axles with the outboard cv swapped for the smaller spline count, or use the hubs from the mx-3 if that is possible.

As for other transmissions that are same, I do not know. The mx-3 forum allows you to search without being a member, if I remember right, so you might find information there. Otherwise I can post on there for you.

noname, i'm getting kind of frustrated here (can't find the trans i'm looking for)

could you please post on the MX3 forum to find which trans out of which car can be swapped into a 93 4 cyl MX (or equivalent)

ok here is what I have come up with so far.

There were two different part numbers for the clutches in the trannys so I designated them 1 and 2. Also the site states that the 323 F4A-EL tranny is 4 solenoid w/ TV cable. Don't know what that means.
The very first number represents how many gears there are. So F3A is a 3-speed.
I believe E is for electronic, while H is for hydraulic.

I got most of the information from this site. I just compiled it and made it into a chart.

Here is some more info referring to these transmissions from the view point of the 626.

                      1983-1986:
                      The F3A, a fairly simple three-speed box.

                      1987:
Mazda's first four-speed automatic, the G4A-EL is a mostly-electronic transmission (hence the "EL") with three shift solenoids, a lockup solenoid, a vane-type pump, and a throttle cable. For some inscrutable reason, it was substantially redesigned after the first year, so '87 Gs can't be substituted for later ones, or vice versa.

                      1988-1992:
The new version of the G4A-EL. Ford adapts it for the Probe in 1989; Ford's designation for the transmission is 4EAT-G.

                      1993:
The G is redone again, and this time it has seven solenoids, a rotor-type pump, and no more throttle cable. Mazda renames it the GF4A-EL. This is the first year of 626 production in the US (sister ships Mazda MX-6/Ford Probe are already being built at Flat Rock, Michigan).

that's what i need!!!!!!!! perfect. now all i need to do is find which years used a seperate TCM that isn't integrated into the ECU and we'll be all set. that and knowing what the spline counts are for the diffs and spindles.

all 91-95 Escorts/Tracers with the 1.8L and G-type auto trans used a separate TCM, located under the radio in the center console, bracketed to the floor.

FYI - all 1.8's got G-type, 1.9's got F-type. Cases and valve bodies (# and type of solenoids) different.

                          F-type is controlled by Ford's EEC-IV PCM

^^So what would be the best choice to retro fit into a Festiva.

not sure, depends on spline counts...
