  • b3 turbo questions

sorry Im new here and there may already be posts on this but heres my question has anyone here ever turbo charged a non fuel injected festiva is it safe or should I just go the motor swap route. Id kinda like to keep the carb set up with a weber and just turbo charge that I know it can be done I just want to know if anyone has already pioneered this. thanks also my e-mail is bobbyspider@gmail.com

no one has done it. The B3 is not worth any investment. just go the motor swap route.

Every car I have owned has had a turbo in it, until I bought this latest festiva.. I plan to fix that though.

With the money spent on boost prepped webbers you could have swapped to fuel injection. There are many more tuning solutions with fuel injection, it is definatley the way to go. I would turbo the b3 if you cant get a swap done. I have t-charged 2 of my festivas and the b3 with a vj11@10psi is definatley a fun ride and was definatley worth doing. You can about double your output with a good matched turbo and efficient setup. However, more power can be had with t-charging a b6 or bp, obviously. If it came down to either a n/a b6, b6d, bp, or a b3t.... b3t is more fun for sure. Just get a bp and t-charge that, you will want more motor eventually

cool thanks for the quick response Ill go with the fuel injected b3 urbo set up. I have a complete stock ct9 starlet kit and a turbo unit off of a saab 900 turbo. (**sorry if Im asking questions all newbies do**) both turbos are rebuilt and have no play. Which would be my best option to start with or neither. I also have a safc2 will this work for engine management. also can you give me a complete list of parts and instructions on how to do (or just direct me to the post that already has them) his hopefully w/ pics. can you buy the mani and other things from any one on the site.

the B3 block is weak and inefficient, you really should at least aim for a B6, B6T, or turbo a BP. With the effort to swap a FI motor into a carb'd system you might as well aim for the larger and stronger motors.

Some thing about turboing a 1.3 liter SOHC with 2 bolt mains, high compression, and weak connecting rods doesn't make sense hah.

there are at least 5 or 6 people now that have sucessfully turbo'd b3s and single cam b6s. i think it is a worthy investment. they are nice easy motors to work on, plus they do take quite a beating (and easy to find replacements). i am getting ready to turbo mine, and there is a guy i met locally that has had his b3 turbo'd for over a year with a t25. i have a small vj13 off of a jdm tt legacy i will be adding to mine and running 7psi. i`m shooting for 40+ mpg plus some extra performance too (hopefully ~100hp) the setup should cost no more than $300, the turbo was 85 with all flanges/fittings.

Nothing at all wrong with the b3 bottom end for a modest setup. I ran mine at 15psi for a few weeks and no problems at all, the only reason I went back to 10 was because I was using a ghetto setup 12:1 fmu and protege bp injectors and was getting good boost afr's but too fat during cruise. If you are set up right I would put money on the engine lasting over 100k. Im sure ill get negative feedback on that statement, but only from people who either had a poor setup or have never t-charged a b3.

I still say swap a bp and charge that, cause its what you will want eventually haha. Boost is highly addictive.

great im just going to start with the turbo b3 for now and get a cam from festiva motor sports and push alitle more fuel. I still want the amazing gas mileage thats why I want to go this way for now also just to start small until I feel more comfortable with the car Im picking up a fuel injected festiva next week and Ill get started. but I still have questions and Ill be asking you guys.
                  1. will my safc2 be ok for engine management
                  2. where can I get parts and instructions for the setup (ex. the manifold and things like that)

-thanks for everything so far this will be fun

Everything turbo related for a festiva is DIY, no one makes parts commercially. My first setup was a MSD BTM for timing control and a 12:1 fmu for fuel and one step colder plugs. As far as instructions, google up a copy of the bible- Corky Bell's "Maximum Boost". Read through that a few times and learn yourself the basics. Reading that and researching the net will give you the answer to #1. It is only 1 piece of the puzzle.

yea i saw your setup its unique yours is the rear mount isnt it. what do you think about the safc2 engine management. also doesnt the member ketchup sell the manifolds for the app. what injectors should I use. Im regularly a toyota guy and just converted I know the 1.3 4efte toyota starlet can put down some power (apx 130hp stock) and I think the 1.3 mazda b3 has potential but I have never done it before. I appreciate your help and any pics you can send. Are there any funny little quarks to the install I should know such as vaccume lines and such or is it pretty much bolt on as is and tune the timing, air and fuel. And where can i get some bigger injectors and possibly a high flow fuel pump for the seup
-sorry if it sounds redundant, thanks again

There are not to many issues. I found it was much cheaper and eaiser to rear mount it. I just added a secondary fuel pump to the motor and used a holley blue fuel pump for the oil. All the fittings came from lowe's for less than $10. I spent less than $300 and am getting 5 lbs. @ 3000rpm and hitting the full 10lbs. @ 4000. I dropped from a low 19 sec. 1/4 mile to a 15.8 1/4 @ 84mph. I had to spend $200 for a clutch as the stock would not handle the additional power. Look up eurotiva on photobucket and you can see more pics. I ran it with 221,000 miles on all stock, original parts. I do recommend a head shim of at least .020 to put the compression in the "safe" range. One of my friends has a corrolla fx-16 and ran a 16.2 so i think there is alot of potential in the little b3s. I sent my head off to get some "top secret" work done. It deserves it. I have been beating (lots of nos) this car for 5 years. Let me know if you have any issues/questions.

Id personally rather have full boost before 2500 and have a torque monster. Our motors are out of steam by 5000 anyway.
