ok i drained my tranny fluid. its metallic. looks like dirty oil with silver streaks in it.
also, about half a cup drained out.... and thats all that was in there. it looks like it is leaking around where the axles enter the tranny.

Thats a common leak but I dont think it would leak down that low though. Should have 2.6 quarts in it.sigpic

ok so i added more fluid and all the noises went away. i took it down the road and it shifted fine and had no issues or sounds.
but it is definitely leaking around the axles a a decent rate. i dont know if there will be oil in there tomorrow even.

Axle seals are cheap, 6-$8, I think.
Just a PITA to have to pull the axles.
Well on the way to pulling the tranny at that point.'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)

You can change them by just undoing the lca's and move the knuckle enough to get the axles out of the trans. Pop the seals out (make sure to lube them before installation) install new ones. Also if your car has stock springs, then it's possible that under heavy acceleration the geometry of the axles is changing enough to leak( by axles almost coming out of the tranny). Don't ask me how I know-Greg

You might want to replace your half shafts too. Ive had new seals leak until the shaft is replaced. Dont get remanufactured ones either. The old shafts get a worn spot where they go through the seal. It only takes a couple of thousands off to cause a leak. Ive never had one leak with new seals and new shafts. Also never let the shaft dangle from the tranny unsupported, it will damage the seals.sigpic

im gonna be honest, im not really familar with this stuff. i have replacement halfshafts that are brand new (pics in my other thread) but they are thicker. they will still use the same seal right?Last edited by Ghost; 02-21-2010, 12:18 AM.

Yes it would use the same seal. The point I was making is that new shafts are better for sealing ( without a leak ) then remanufactured shafts. The remans tend to leak.....for me at least. I'm talking about original seals and shafts.Last edited by freshtiva; 02-21-2010, 12:56 AM.sigpic
