Karl, the pick and pull near us is showing 3 2001 Rios now. Two added just last week. I'm not around this weekend/week to check them out. You should go have a look!

I didn't bother to count the teeth, probably should have..it would be interesting to rip it back apart and get some measurements, but I just dont have the time or space for that right now. A lot of different internet sources say they have a 4.105 FDR.

Ive done this trans swap twice and is very easy . Just get the mounts with the trans and shifter rods and axles then your set .
Im not sure about the gearing but i will say 65mph holds the b6t about 3500 rpms . It was perfect for my area but if you run interstate alot it would be annoying .
New build on the way .

I did a little research on this awhile back, the 01's had the 4.10ish FD and I believe in 02 they got a much better for highway 3.85 or something because they switched engines I believe and needed an mpg boost

I checked last night and my stock 5 speed does just a hair over 2500 rpm at 65 mph.

Since I'm turning Prettystiva into a "cruiser" for long, comfortable trips and decent mileage, 3500 rpm at 65 won't do it. Too noisy and too thirsty!

I'm really thinking she needs that B8 swap I was planning on being my next step.

Found this...note Ken2400's post near the middle bottom:

He wrote: "You said it. My 2002 5sp is going like 3200 RPMs + at 65MPH. It is the main reason I will get rid of it before I want to."

(Any difference between his and Shadetree's engine speed could be due to different tire sizinig.)

Ah, here is the '02 5 speed gearing:

              Drivetrain: Front Wheel Drive
              Trans Type: 5
              Trans Description Cont.: Manual
              First Gear Ratio (:1): 3.42
              Second Gear Ratio (:1): 1.90
              Third Gear Ratio (:1): 1.30
              Fourth Gear Ratio (:1): 0.91
              Fifth Gear Ratio (:1): 0.74
              Reverse Ratio (:1): 3.27
Final Drive Axle Ratio (:1): 4.17

Here it is for the '04 Rio, same site:

              Drivetrain: Front Wheel Drive
              Trans Type: 5
              Trans Description Cont.: Manual w/OD
              First Gear Ratio (:1): 3.42
              Second Gear Ratio (:1): 1.90
              Third Gear Ratio (:1): 1.30
              Fourth Gear Ratio (:1): 0.97
              Fifth Gear Ratio (:1): 0.78
              Reverse Ratio (:1): 3.27
Final Drive Axle Ratio (:1): 4.17

Looks like with the adoption of the larger engine, fourth and fifth gears were changed. Final drive is the same at 4.17:1.

              Could be wrong I suppose.

I had no clue that the FD was 4.17 thats ok for a 1.3l but not a 1.8l. This tranny would be a great upgrade for a stock 1.3-1.6 but for a 1.8 its way to much gear imo.Especially when you factor in the F series clutch drool

You could always up the tire size, since the larger engine has more power, it will lower the RPMs with the same ground speed.

Long drives are not that bad with the Rio trans. I have one in my car from hulk and it is a little higher rpms but I still got 33 mpgs driving from pa to new jersey a couple times and that is with the b6t motor.
