  • Stratified Megasquirt PNP for 1995 Aspire B3+T

A couple of weeks ago I purchased one of Lex's Generic ND64 MSPNP units for my aspire turbo project. The goal is to use it for the B3+t and later on use it for a BP+t setup. I have been corresponding with him with a few questions along the way of setup and he has been great with turn around replies. I have offered to supply him with all the correct wiring information that will be necessary for him to add aspire to his list of vehicles that it fits in the future.

I have made a few charts to help me decipher the correct pin locations to the corresponding pin locations on the ms unit. I did however find a few discrepancies in the ford evtm PCM connector pin chart. It incorrectly listed CID as CKP and vice versa. It also incorrectly had vref and signal return backwards as well, ( I verified this by checking on my own tps with a meter).

Just wanted to give some insight to my project thus far. I have gotten all of the jumpers ran inside the PNP unit but I have to swap the vref and signal ones I want to keep it plug n play (no connector pin swapping) so I can mess with tuning and if need be plug back in the stock PCM to drive temporarily. I've gotten a chance to hook it up to tunerstudio on my laptop using the external power input and familiarize my self with it a bit and I have to say, this is awesome.! Almost reminds me of ford Ids (with the little ms icon in the lower corner )but better cause I make the tune not ford...!

If anyone has any questions or info I would be pleased to answer and accept. I'm just gonna say that before it gets plugged in, due to the awesome diagrams ford borrowed and butchered from Mazda, I will be pinpoint testing every wire and verifying it does what it is supposed to do, also before I send any info to lex as well so no one will blow a new PCM on my account.

      dude, that is AWESOME..

I bought a pnp unit from lex for a 90-94 protege bp, and it's going in my BPT swap 94 aspire with the aspire wiring harness (with pins rearranged at the ecu socket) and anything extra that needs ran/changed. If you have any info to make my life easier, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm hoping to be doing that within the next 2-3 weeks, and I may have some questions for you.

Not a problem glad to help. I have access to all of the service info on fords end and alldata for everything else. I've been comparing my 1995 aspire diagrams to 1994 B6d mx-3 diagrams, 1993 festiva diagrams, 1995 EGT diagrams and 1997 aspire diagrams. The aspire uses sequential injection but I'm pretty sure the bp ms unit you bought is set up as batch fire which means you may or may not need to pair your injector feeds unless lex did it for you inside the unit. As far as the tuning is concerned I'm at a loss without a base tune so I won't be much help with that. I've tried downloading the b6d and bp fwd tunes that lex had posted on his website to take a look at the fuel/ign maps and the setup settings but I can't get tunerstudio to load them. Are you going to run knock sense, I want to but I haven't decided on a setup yet, any thoughts? You got a wideband?

Haven't bought a wideband yet, and I haven't put much thought into a knock sensor either..actually, I still need a clutch, starter, intercooler and piping too, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I am thinking I'll grab the wideband and whatever I need to run NA until I get the car running, broke in, and get used to the megasquirt, then put the turbo on...

The proteges in the US were set up for batch fire injection, I was comparing the wiring diagrams for a 94/95 Aspire from the haynes manual and the EVTM manual to the wiring diagrams from a 93 protege in the haynes, and 90-93 chiltons manual. I really don't care if it ends up as batch or sequential as long as it works! I don't have the diagrams or my notes in front of me, but I'm pretty sure the injector feeds were all in the right places already, its just a couple other wires that need moved.

One thing that does bug me tho, since I'm switching to a MAP sensor, the VAF was tied into a lot of stuff, will I still need it plugged in or could it be deleted altogether, aspires came with a MAF sensor. I really don't want to overcomplicate things lol, so I'm not trying to get worked up thinking about it.

Festivas were batch injection as well just fyi. I took a look at the diagram for the bp vaf. It looks like all you have to worry about to eliminate it is iat and fuel pump relay ground feed. The ms can be set up to provide the ground feed to the fuel pump relay that is already in the aspire connector. I don't have the pin number of hand but all you need to do is take the cover off the ms and see if the fuel pump spot on the circuit board is jumped to the right pin on the connector side to correlate to the aspire plug. Since the aspire uses maf the oem PCM is what energized the relay rather than the vaf switch way.

As far as iat is concerned the aspire uses an iat that is not part of the maf sensor where as the bp used the internal "vat". Since your not using the vaf you dont need to worry. The aspire one unscrews from the air box and can be screwed into a bung into the intake pipe/tube. For turbo applications it needs to be closest to the throttle body to measure the air AFTER it passes the intercooler and runs through the charge tube to get a correct measure of air temp entering the intake.

Stratified Megasquirt PNP for 1995 Aspire B3+T

Revisiting the B3T project, since my 97 is put away. Will post updates. The Kit it's going on tomorrow and the. The ms tuning will follow as it runs pretty well on stock PCM with the blow thru Maf. I bought a breakout box adapter I'm using as a 2 foot jumper harness so I can just leave my old PCM mounted and plug in the ms. Tune, unplug, drive away..

                Hi 'ya Tim,

I have been running a Megasquirt II on my B3 for about a month now. My situation is slightly different as the B3 is in a Miata. I rewired the Miata so it is electrically the same as a Festiva. I originally used a Festiva ECU but decided to go megasquirt for better fuel management.

Anyway, I'm tuning for better MPG and not performance. The B3 spins about 500 rpm faster with the Miata transmission and rear axle.

The odd thing is, I'm getting almost the same MPG with Megasquirt (40-42 mpg). I cannot seem to get past this. Tomorrow I'm going to try a Aspire roller cam from an automatic equipped car... worth a shot...I think.

The good news is the car performs a lot better and I seem to get better acceleration with the megasquirt.

                Jim

Stratified Megasquirt PNP for 1995 Aspire B3+T

Well.. I've finally gotten around to plugging in my megasquirt and am pleased to say that it works, the car will start up and run if I tip in on the throttle. Problem is I'm not sure how to set up the isc-bpa settings in tuner studio. It will run at super high idle if I set it to on/of so I know the valve output works I just have no idea what setting to start with. Thank you much

After more research and the fact that it is a 2 wire valve I'm going to set it to pwm warm up. I was looking in my settings in tunerstudio and it was set to inverted meaning 100% is off rather than 0% being off. Going to setup my base timing to the MSII once I figure that out too.

I set up an oscilloscope this evening to watch the signal that is generated by the factory PCM to the iac valve. cold idle it measured a 63% duty cycle with a frequency that stayed at 193hz for much of the time but would occasionally switch to 208hz.

So decided to start from scratch. I saved my current tune and then downloaded the b6d tune from stratifiedauto. Double checked the settings and fired it right up. Idled fine and smooth but the idle kept slowing down the more it warmed up until i shut it off because it was 490 rpm. The wide band was reading around 12.5 when it was still idling low so looks like I need to lean it out a bit. Gonna read the megamanual some more and familiarize my self with proper setup

I did also notice that my narrowband reading on tunerstudio wasn't changing at all so I'm going to need to check and make sure that it the sensor is working and sending input to the PCM. Hope it is because its a denso that I just installed this summer. Just watching the wideband on the stock PCM after just starting that car and its already up to 13.3 from 10.1 after 2 mins. Def too rich on the msii

what are you guys using for tps? or are you running completely on map sensor? My tps wires aren't hot, no voltage so i was wondering what i could do to get it to work? i swapped the tps to a vtps cause i know its better but i heard i need to run a extra wire to the distributor?
