  • Megasquirters, please help!

Looking for a bit of help/guidance from anyone with megasquirt knowledge! Ive had my squirt (MS2 v3.0) assembled for about 4 years now, sitting idle. I have wired up a harness to adapt the MS to the factory wiring for my B3. The problem I am having is getting cam signal from the Festiva distributor. Following this guide it seems like I may need to add a mod to the board, but I am not 100% sure. When I initially built the MS, i just followed the standard online build guide with the addition of the mapdaddy 4 upgrade.
I currently have the BLU/ORG wire on the distributor (labeled PSOUT on the ECA diagram) wired to pin 36 on the MS.
I have the YEL/BLU "Crank Position Sensor" (CPS) signal wired to pin 24.

I do not see any RPM when cranking.

    Running in 4g63 mode.

Don’t you need a 36-1 missing tooth trigger wheel on the crank for it to work correctly?

From my understanding, the crank trigger wheel is an optional upgrade for higher accuracy of crank position. A lot of the miata guys run straight off of the distributor/CAS depending on year, and DIYautotune even makes a plug and play kit for our harness. That leads me to believe that I should have everything needed to get the car started. My biggest obstacle, currently, is figuring out how the plug and play unit is set up internally and if my wires are all going to the right places.

The information is all out there, but with so many different setups and everyone kinda doing things their own way, its almost impossible to find a straight forward conclusion.

At the end of the day, im just doing this because I have all of the parts sitting around and I want to get some experience in before I dive into the deep end. I will eventually (hopefully) be using this setup on a BP car, where I will be using a 36-1 wheel and making my own harness.

The festiva distributor only has a single trigger in it, if your doing basic trigger with a single coil for the distributor it should work. How are you wiring it to the ms2. Set it to basic trigger in the ignition options and see if you get any rpm signal. A 36-1 wheel would be better. I've had trouble getting a reliable signal from a b3 dissy

Sticking with the factory coil/ignition, not looking to do anything hardcore with the engine. Ill have to check all of my settings when I get home from work. I do have the ms simulator, which when hooked up would show RPM in tuner studio with the default settings.
How did you have the distributor wired up? Did you need to add any mods or specific setup to get a reading off the factory distributor?
I have a distributor off of an Aspire and early BP sitting around if either of those world work any better.

The festiva one should work for a single coil setup. No mods should be needed to the ms2, just need it setup for an hall effect sensor I'm setup for sequential spark so I have a 36-1 wheel on mine I was able to get a tach signal with a stock dissy In testing

I'm running a stratified plug and play setup so I believe the board might be slightly different but this is how I wired it.

Unless you're trying to run sequential fuel (which is possible with a BP disty) the cmp signal parts of those miata guides aren't necessary. If you're running basic batch fire with a disty you just need to wire it up per the hall effect section of the mega manual. Page 65 if my link doesn't take you there directly. I believe you will need to add the pull up resistor to the board.

I can't remember if I used a pull up resister. I don't think I did .ill check tomorrow I'm not at my house tonight. According to the pinpoint you posted it shows a 1k resister pullup for the opto+ which should be your tach signal from the dissy Screenshot_20180709-230622_Chrome.jpg

Yup but you'll need to refer to the manual for where that resistor needs to be. The stratified board has a spot where you just solder in a resistor to add it to the circuit correctly. The normal ms2 boards don't have this so you need to run some jumper wires I believe.

Set the spark mode back to basic trigger, still nothing. I pulled the manual back up and went through all the ignition stuff, found I had a diode across D10 which apparently I should have left out. Pulled it off the board and gave it another shot... Still not seeing any crank RPM. It’s getting late now, but tomorrow I’ll dig into this pull-up resistor. It’s gotta be something stupid I overlooked, years ago. :sad1:

I have no clue about the stratified, I've built plenty of diy kits and make a few customer harnesses but never messed with the stratified stuffs

Stratified uses a microsquirt plugged into a custom I/O board. Different animal.

I think this may do it, I had everything wired up for ground switching/OPTO. Got it wired up with a resistor and set up for Vr now, I will report back when I get home and give it a test.

Got everything hooked up last night, seems to have done the trick! Still have a bunch of troubleshooting to do, not getting any feedback from the coil. Spent most of yesterday stringing in a wideband and looking for a misplaced electrical connector but im getting closer!
