    no pop

I don't want the hatch to pop open. just unlock when I double push the Viper remote open button. I sometimes push the wrong button without looking (remote in pocket). I don't want to have to go to the vehicle and push the hatch shut.

^^No, you can wire it to lock it too. You know there is a tab on the latch you can push to lock it, so you dont have to lock it with the key, right?

Its not pointless at all. Lots of new cars have an electronic/cable trunk/hatch release.

use a set of relays to control the rear actuator - you may have to use two - dual position relays to achive the desired result - if you have a diagram of your switches I can draw you up a skematic of how to wire your relays

on the right you see a resistor, as follows:

Value [Ω] Shorthand Color bands (5% tolerance) Range (5%) [Ω]
                    1k 1K Brown, black, red, gold 950Ω - 1.05kΩ

get your dvom and check what wires have continuity when you push each button then run wires to your relays, if you want to use relays.
