  • Has anyone ever considered making an adapter plate to change out rear axle stubs?

I was thinking about this the other day, did a little research and came up empty.

Seems like you could make a 1/2" plate with countersunk screws or tapped. Then you could get different rear spindles that might have different brake options.

Granted, it would change your offest, but lets ignore that for now.

I think what you will find is all the spindles that would work with the small lighter cars are very close to the same bolt pattern. You would be trying to drill your new bolt pattern in your adapter plate either just missing the bolts that hold the adapter plate to your trailing arm or even hitting the edge of the adapter plate bolts.

You could try making an adapter plate like the Escort/Weber to Festiva carb adapter, but that is going to push your wheels out quite a bit, unless you get some wheels with some major backspace/offset.
      You gonna race that thing?

I spent time looking at OEM Aspire and Festy spindles, brake mounting and backing plates awhile back and concluded that most home-built modifications would look "Jerry-built" or "Jury-rigged" even if the end result happened to work. I didn't say this to "throw water on the fire" but it is worth considering. With Aspires increasingly becoming more rare than Festys it is well worth looking at alternative solutions for 4 x 100 wheel pattern rear brakes. Adapted Rio goodies for the front have been a godsend but nothing has so far come along to upgrade the back.

Other than the couple Capri xr2 rear swaps. Geneva dirt has one, I believe. All wheel disc brakes. But it takes a lot of modification.

Has anyone looked into trying to swap on, dare I say it, Honda parts. I realize that this is not ideal, but there is a plethora of cheap brake and suspension solutions for your average Civic. I know the CRX is of similar size and weight, but I don't know if it has IRS or a solid beam like our beloved festys. VW Golf stuff would also fall into this category.

I took measurements of a few rear ends at the JY. Have yet to compare them. I will report back if anything looks viable.

I was also thinking... I can make this!! Would just need to pick which rear spindle set to use.

Yeah, I was thinking rear discs as well. I was searching Google for spindle pics, there was one, I think it was Honda, that the back side of the spindle protruded out quite a bit, like maybe 3/4"? I don't think that would work, but I saw another one that had caliper brackets cast into it. I didn't care about pushing the wheel out as I don't have new wheels yet, plus I'm looking at flairing out the fenders anyway. I had to replace a spindle on my car already when I bought it, which is why I was looking for a slightly stouter one anyway.

Dumb question... has anyone tried the Rio?

I know not disk, but the beam should have same patern as another kia with disk

Maverick & Pinto were RWD, Maverick had a 8" and I think the Pinto a 7.5". I've got a MK3 Golf GTI VR6 in my backyard, when I get it around I'll look at it better.

The one thing is, you may end up changing bolt patterns as well. Focus maybe a donor too.

Focus is 4x108. You think the stock Festy pattern is hard to get wheels for, just go looking for Focus wheels.

I found a possible source. The Isuzu Stylus has bolt on stub axles with a pattern very close to festiva. May even be aspire. I was not able to get them off at the JY because they were very damaged. If somebody can see if they ever came disc, they should fit

Looks like 91-93 isuzu stylus had disc option. Now to find one...
