  • jcbgrady's BP swap

I'm starting my BP swap thread. The swap won't be til mid summer but I need to pull the B3, prep the car and BP. I'll be doing all that here as well as asking questions as needed. So let's get started!

Here is the car when I bought it. Pretty rough.

Here is the car as it sits now.

Her is the Mazda 1.8 16v DOHC BP engine.

    1993 Ford Festiva L ($650)
Mazda 1.8L BP - PaceSetter Header (in progress)
    Aspire Swap - 15x6.5 wheels, 205/50/15 tires

You are in the only Forum that will have all your questions answered.
Are you going to put in Aspire brakes?
Have fun, and build it safe.
Aspires and Sways all around, Miata B6 installed, KYB G2Rs just installed in front. Wish for coil overs someday.

I'll do the Aspire swap as soon as funds are available. I say that because Aspire swap means I get to buy new wheels and tires as well!

That BP is CLEAN! Did you get it off of ebay for $800 or something?! I like the paint job as well. I will keep my eyes on this build.
The normal is not always normal... MOST is not ALL... And any job can be hard if you don't have the right tools!!!

Yeah, it's real clean. It's one I purchased from festivaWES in S.MO. The wife and I drove down there on a Saturday and brought it back. Wes is a cool cat.

Ok, so I've finally gotten some work done on the car. I've pulled the fenders, doors, hatch, hood, glass and dash. I did a little more body work (still not perfect/happy but I'm ready to move on).

Time start making room in the engine bay for the BP. Anyone local want to help me pull the B3? :toothy5:

Here's a pic of the progress.

Well, I've been trying to pull the pass. side axle myself for a couple of days. Finally, I called the Supermodel in for backup. We got the driver side out no prob. but the pass. side won't budge. We tried prying, wedging and pounding the hell out of it. Nothing.

Again, thanks for the help Dan.

Going to Harbor Freight or a farm store tomorrow so see about getting a large enough pickle fork to fit around the shaft. Anyone tried this before? What's the diameter of the shaft?

try just a chizel or a wood splitting wedge on one side of it, I've done that before.

                        Slide hammer on the axle.
Assume you are keeping the festiva tranny then?
Otherwise, drop the tranny with the axle in place.

i just use a prybar and a hammer (3lb mini sledge) take the prybar and slip it between the tri-pot housing and the trans (6 'o clock position) then take the mini sledge and smack it against the bar or handle (depends on length) NOT against the butt of the handle (don't want to hammer into the shaft, but in the direction you're prying). slide hammer won't work as it usually pulls the bearings out of the tri-pot.

Dan and I tried the log splitter wedge. We couldn't keep the wedge from slipping out of position. Dan thought the wedge got to thick, to quickly. I wasn't about to start grinding it down though. I'll try again tomorrow with whatever I find at the farm store...

I'd pull the battery tray and coil and bracket and yank the motor with the axle still in it. It's no biggie if you the motor and trans in there. I'll be up at the soonest possible date. Try and find the exhaust manifold.
