Honda engineering is is second to none and they make insanely cool cars ie the NSX. But I still love MAZDA's especially the Rotary twin turbo RX7's from the 90's. One of my Supervisors at work has a brother who builds NSX's and engines for race teams. HE is doing a twin turbo engine for a Pikes Peak NSX and they estimate @ 1200 Hp.
Some people like to read fiction,I prefer to read repair manuals. Weird I know-

Mazda does seem to have a design problem, at least when stock transmissions are applied to racing.
I seem to go through Mazda RX7 transmissions like candy when racing, running a street ported 12A rotary engine in an RX7, with a redline around 8000 rpm. They break in all kinds of ways,
-usually when shifting between 3rd and 4th, while moving the gear shift, and before letting out the clutch
          - once right after letting out the clutch
          - once well after a shift into 3rd, while cruising at WOT half way down the straight

and usually the same things break, but not always
          - the teeth on 3rd gear disappear
          - or the teeth on 4th gear disappear
          - or two gear selector clutch sleeves engage and the whole counter shaft strips
          - or it won't go into several gears, usually because the selector clutch sleeves have their teeth burred off

With the RX7 I think the main problem is shifting at such high rpm, as it is well above stock redline of 7000 rpm. Rushing the shifts makes it worse, but I have long since developed a disengage, pause and re-engage stroke that is as slow as you are going to want to be in a race car. I think there are harmonics in the driveline that flex the gears during the shifts and misalign them.

The RX7 tranny is part of a long continuation by Mazda, and the one in the 90's Miata is essentially the same, with somewhat better synchro design in after 94. The tranny in the RX8 is still very similar, one extra gear, yet designed for a 9000 rpm stock redline. However, it is known for a notchy, grinding second gear, so still problems. Of course, these RWD trannies are quite different in design than the FWD's but they are still done by the same company.

Interesting, in the speed3 our transmissions can handle several hundred whp over stock with virtually no major issues (except a new clutch helps over 400whp). Maybe Mazda is catching on.

It occurs to me that Mazda's trannies work fine in stock form, but not so much for racing. (Mazda 3 aside apparently. Maybe someone should work on that swap?) On the other hand Honda's are way over designed in suspension for a stock car, with double A arms up front and independent rear suspension while other use Macpherson struts and semi independent trailing arms. That is over built for handling on a street car, maybe Honda does the same for their driveline?
