  • B8-ME DD!

Alright, hopefully by posting I will give myself the push to get this project finished. My daily driver had the 5 speed fail, and E series are apparently getting hard to find. I have managed to get my other nice automatic running as my current car, but it is meant to be used for a different project. So, the plan is to make a nice new Daily with a little more pep and decent gas mileage.

What I have here is a 1992 Automatic Festiva and a 1990 Mazda 323 Protege. My plans are to take the B8 + Manual Transmission and swap it over with whatever other goodies I can make fit into the Festiva. I will hopefully be able to use the automatic C/V shafts, but I will find out as I go if this will work or not. So without further ado, here are the pics:

These are all before pics. I have so far started in the engine removal from the Festiva, and cleaned up the engine of the Mazda and made sure it is running correctly before the install. I had a high idle problem I had to remedy last night, but I think I got it taken care of. Will be posting more pics of progress as I go. Feel free to throw out any advice! Always love learning something new.

Ok - I have been slowly making progress and taking lots of pictures. Unfortunately time is limited, so I haven't had a chance to upload or update yet. I promise it is going to happen. Probably make a nice PDF for everyone. So far it has been going smoothly.

I am finally trying to get the best position for the engine and transmission, and was curious if anyone has played around with the F series transmissions and a B8ME? It seems to me like it wants to go a little more towards the driver side but that is going to require some frame alterations. Nothing to big, but an added step. Other than seeing how much play the axles have, what's the best way to centre the engine?

I'll happily take any advice I can get! Thanks for reading.

This to me was ('is' to you) what I figured to be was a lovely stock engine swap (most former owners didn't hotrod or beat these engines to death like they did B6Ts and the like) to retain the reliability and DD of a Festy and yet get the hp up by almost double and at the same time gain another 500 rpm for take-offs. 323s ran on 175-13 wheels so in combination with an Aspire swap I suspect the speedo would read pretty good too.

              Bump?

Was there a question that didn't get answered or something?
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

Hey Sketchman - I'm just trying to decide on where in the engine bay to sit the engine. I'm using the automatic C/V shafts and everything looks to be lining up, but I'm trying to figure out if I should alter the driver side frame to move everything over a bit more. As it is, it will have to be almost touching.

Just hoping for some words of guidance!

Ok - Updates... I have the mounts finished. I have shortened the shifter linkage (I used the mounting plate and linkage from the Protege). Now I am trying to get the electronics connected and see if it will run. I am using the auto axles and will find out if they work or not. Pictures to everything here : http://imgur.com/a/e5jRz

I have a few questions stil:

Regarding the IAC wires, I read that I will need to change the plug to the IAC with the one from the Protege. Does anyone know what colors I should connect to what? (Pictures in the album)

For the transmission wires, can anyone look and kindly advise me what colors go where from the Festiva harness? It was originally an auto so I don't know if this will matter or not. The plugs on the transmission and completely different. The wire count still looks to be five though?

For the injectors, should I be using the Purple ones or the Grey ones out of the Protege? I would think the grey ones are correct? I will be using the Protege computer.

On the back of the engine bay there is a metal box with a metal cage around it? What is that for?

Finally, anyone have any idea why I have a Misubishi sensor on my engine?? Did a double take when I saw that!

Thanks again for all and any help you guys can offer!

Looking good, I'll be keeping an eye on your progress. Doing all the mounts without welding?

Mitsubishi is a huge electronics manufacturer, as well as automotive and heavy industrial. It's not uncommon to see the diamond star logo on parts that fit many different brand cars.

Sounds like you are almost done. User the b8 ecu, vaf, and injectors.

The iac, colors don't matter, just go by size, big wire to big wire, small to small.

And for spacing left to right, use the b3 passenger side mount and drill the hole on the car 7/8ths closer to the passenger side.

It's a great swap, mine with a small turbo, stock injectors and ecu, made 154 whp & 170 ft lbs, and went 14.0 @ 99 mph in the 1/4 mile

For the most part, yes. The only welding I needed to do was on the shifter linkage. If you really had no other way I think you could use some jb weld and some oversized pipe to connect it after you cut it to shorten it. That part was the biggest pain to try and make sure I had everything lined up right with one person!
