Street drag racing was big in Ottawa in the mid to late 60s and early 70s. All straight line stuff with American iron. Everyone met and compared cars at the donut shop on Carling Avenue. Cops continually tried to break it up but that only increased the overall appeal. Ultimately some smart thinker (these kind of people are extremely rare in gov'ts) at the City used water trucks to wet the main intersections all along the main drag (wonder where that term comes from) every evening. That put an end to all of the burnouts and smoke shows in no time flat and street racing quickly fizzled out.
Now of course they threaten everybody with fines, jail time and vehicle impoundment and unattainable insurance rates for almost anything. I'm very glad not to have been born and raised during this age and time.

The recognized intent in the constitutional text is not to protect your right to be at, or view illegal events. The explicit intent is, in fact, to protect your right to protest or petition legal entities and actions.
You /might/ get away with it if you and a group of others were holding protest signs (Street racing is baaadd... MMk.) but it'd be a stretch, at best.

there used to be like 100 cars that would park at a huge parkinglot on rt 30 here. some people did street race frome time to time but that wasnt the main reason that everyone was there, it was basicly a fri-sat night carshow. old heads and young bucks, muscle and tuners, bikes and heavy chevys, backyard builds and srt10s... everyone. then one day the cops swarmed in like a sting opperation and made everyone sit in the middle of the lot and gave everyone fines for... guess... overnight parking lol so guess what, all those cars that would come chill are now back on the road yup you guessed it "street racing" instead of hanging out.
noone wants an actuall solution to the problem they just want everyone to shut up go home sit in front of the tv and play cod. i dont want to do that i want to have some fun and cause some trouble from time to time all the interesting adults i know have stories of adventure ill be one of them thank youLast edited by bobbyspider; 08-22-2012, 08:14 PM.

It moved from there down to the old "Carpet Mart" building just under the RT581 bridge, where someone eventually got stabbed over the result of an illegal contest of speed on the pike earlier that day. Haven't heard if anyone still goes down there or not. The Wal-Mart here in Horseheads, NY does something similar. One of the few reasons I still support Wal-Mart, they're somewhat pro-active in allowing civil activity.

I remember "going out Woodward" on Friday and Sat nights back in the mid 50s and 60's up in Detroit. It was [still is actually] 4 lanes each way with a 50 yard median in a kinda rural area. The whole scene morphed into what is now the annual Woodward Dream Cruise weekend.
Back then you would cruise through one of several driveins and challenge someone or be challenged to run. Sometimes up to 4 cars would pull up abreast once we got out in the open, then slow down blocking following traffic until the road cleared ahead. We all would punch it from that slow roll when we saw someone hit it. I never heard of an accident but most of the cars weren't crazyfast like they are now. They say Delorean brought ought the first GTO he had cooked up at GM. The good old days.

My cousin was killed along with two other people while watching an illegal, poorly organized drag race. Her name was Kate and she was 16 at the moment, this was in 2007.
I am also a noob here.rusEfi - DIY ECU

Wisconsin Statues: Chapter 346. Rules of the road.
346.94(2)
(2) Racing. No operator of a motor vehicle shall participate in any race or speed or endurance contest upon any highway.
The fine for this is $20-$400 for the first and subsequent convictions.
(2) No person may endanger the safety of any person or property by the negligent operation of a vehicle.
346.62(2m)
The fine is $20-$200, except if this is the second or more violation in a 4 year period from the first or initial violation, even if the consecutive violations are a matter of local laws (as opposed to state laws), in which case the fine for such conviction is $50-$500 and/or up to 1 year in jail.
And those are just the obvious things you can be charged with.
WI also has a "points" system, as far as I know, which could also mean license suspension and further costs associated with the first or repeat convictions, and I'm sure there are a few more charges they could dig up if the cop were not willing to give you a break, which is exactly what he did.
Also note that the term "race or contest" is not clearly defined, therefore could be construed to mean only one (singular) operator and vehicle combination, leading you into the same conundrum faced by PA and other states' speed junkies - that a contest needn't have a physical opponent.

The cops out here allow gathering so they can isssue more citations. You also have people on forums ratting each other out, like subaru calling cops on vw, mustangs on srt4 and hondas and so on.1993 GL 5 speed

I was the victim of a violent street racethis morning. I was driving my 93 auto to work, when what appeared to be a 65-70 year old lady sped up so that I couldn't get in front of her while merging into the freeway at a blistering 45mph. It was difficult for me to recover my momentum, as this is the "danger zone" in the Festiva automatics power curve. Where are the cops when you need them? She should get the book thrown at her in her Chrysler town and country.Driving for me is neither a right nor a privilege. Driving is my passion, as it was for the people who invented the automobile, the people who paved the first roads and the people who continue to improve the automobile. Please respect this passion.
