rear tire

Got a 90 festiva, trying to take rear wheel off to replace tire. removed the four lugs, tire still won't budge. There's some rust, and short of beating the crap out of the wheel i don't know what to do. any suggestions?

Smack it harder! :naka: Brute force is all you need. Try hitting side-to-side, and "rock" it off. Use a block of wood, and a small sledge.

i'll give that a shot

Gonna do the hammer/wood block method. Also used some liquid wrench around the rim of the hub, but that didn't seem to work. Any other ideas or suggestions are quite welcome!

When you put it back on I suggest using some grease or anti-sieze around the hub where the rim fits over. This will prevent future problems.

Been beating the holy crap out of it for over an hour, still no budge. Any other suggestions?

try losening the lug bolts up a few turns and then get in the car and drive it in circles briskly untill the wheel breaks free.

Just make sure you have the car on some nice jack stands so it won't fall on you before you start hitting it. Festivas may be light, but 680lbs falling on you will still hurt.

addendum

forgot to mention the tire was flat. was about to get in and drive it around, then figured that might not be good for the rim.

Try this:

set the parking brake. with the lug bolts off, and the center "cutesy cap" off (if it has one), try using some long lever or bar, and turn the rim. See if it will maybe break loose that way...

have someone put weight on the lever, and whack that rim. There should be no other reason (other than rust) as to why this rim will not come off.

if it's rusted on you might try the rust eater stuff.

Drive it really slow with the flat tire and the lugnuts loose a couple of turns. It wont hurt the rim, if anything it will hurt the tire, but probably not even the tire if you move slow.

Think in terms of heat, vibration, force-leverage. Usually works. Sometimes by themselves, sometimes in conjunction with another.
