I'd head up "FestivaUSA," a factory and research center located near Huntington, West Virginia. Besides research into "green" Festivas, we'd build the "Festiva II," essentially the same cheap concept, size and shape within the following parameters:

-modern improvements in design, build quality, environmental impact, etc.
-possible improvements in Cd (without unduly changing the design)
-the best of high-technology performance design informing the basest, low-tech builds for easy servicing, long life and recyclability (this car will be servicable by lower primates and kept in service with parts off 1970s era washing machines if necessary)
      -museum and small conference center
-camping and small dorms for Festiva meets ("USAstiva!")
      -test track and deluxe junkyard
      -"Special Projects" division
      -"Restoration" division

      Here is where I'd begin:

-slightly improved crash protection (modern tech and more steel adding around 50-100 pounds)
      -manual seatbelts
-Aspire suspension and MT brakes standard
-modern improvements in B4 (1400cc) engine design for better fuel economy; base hp of around 70; new EPA estimates would be around 35/45 mpg for this model
-minimal computer controls, with add-on computer capabilities for those who want it
-optional all aluminum 1.6L DOHC "B6N" engine with around 120 hp ("N" for "new")
-diesel engine option, already prepped for biodiesel conversions
-simple hybrid add-on rear axle and battery pack options (adds a 10 hp electric motor in each hub giving regen braking capability; disc brakes)
-base 5 speed MTX upgraded to handle 130 hp with little increase in weight over "classic Festiva" unit
-70-90% parts interchangability with classic Festivas
-some manufacturing of selected classic Festiva-specific parts and upgrades

As time went on and we settle into the car market, new versions will appear to take advantage of what is going on. Possible additions would be:

      -longer/taller van versions
-all electric version; more hybrid versions
      -external combustion engine research
      -solar power interface research
      -sustainability research

We advertise our cars as "low tech world cars manufactured by good old Hillbilly labor in the heart of Appalachia."

BTW, I was conceived in W. Va. so I can joke about Hillbillies.

Oh, and if we're including "fantasy" in this exercise...

Late at night, after production ceases, all the mice would be treated to the shrieks of lustful laughter as resurrected poets Edna St. Vincent Millay and Carson McCullers chase me around the factory floor with their canes.

Don't worry, I won't let Carson smoke in the place.

Yeah, I'd let them catch me.

That's all for now. I don't wanna get banned.

[QUOTE=piratewilly;174903]hey its not weird, its ur dream so thats cool i like that idea, preserve it so other generations can enjoy it like we do. And hey about A/C, my 88 lx is carbed and has A/C and if i keep my foot out of it it will still get great gas mileage. Most recently i was doing almost all city driving and i averaged 53.4 MPG i just never take the car over 2500 RPM and accelerate slowly. In all honesty it really doesn't take that much longer to get to your destination when you drive slow.

We have a '90 L Plus, with 5-speed, and I know we get 42 to 45 mpg constantly because of driving like you say.....keep it reasonable, and I drive to work about 10 miles away never over 60. But then, I live in rural area, love to pass the gas stations up 3 weeks in a row.....LOL ! I think the same thing about taking just a few moments more driving a bit slower.
I have a beat '88 too, wondering of fixing it up more, or checking out a white '88 LX, and may do it instead. That is what is new out my way ........

My new dreamstiva*(think it is good enough to share)
I want a 88-89 rust free LX, then I would make it a truck. Then it would be RWD with a 302 small block and supercharger sticking out of the hood, and a mustang II front end, and torque thrust II wheels. And it would have protege body colored swoopy mirrors, clear taillights from Iran. Semi muffler stacks(4") GTX body kit (not the hood). Also, spray on boxliner.
                    Pretty realistic, dontcha think?

                              Engine:
I would rip out the 1.5 and install the whole engine and train from a AWD TX3 Laser (Tracer), except up the capacity to 2 litres and forged internals and high boost.

Brakes: Big 6 piston rotors and calipers, 4 out back with braided lines.

Suspension: Full adjustable coilover with camber and caster adjustment.

Interior: full retrim in grey or black

Exterior: shave driprails, handles and door moulds, add sunroof and cover in wild graphics over 2 tone.

Then detail the whole car on rotisserie.....
