I've taken off the intake plastic and am waiting for the metal parts to cool right now. I have work at 5 though.

I no longer have my Haynes manual- it went when I sold my other Festiva.
How do I remove the throttle body/intake to take off the valve cover?

I will post pictures of the whole car sometime soon. Give me a week or so to get it running.
It is a 1993 Festiva L, red. Dealership plaque on back from Carrolton, TX, about an hour from where I am now. 58,000 miles.
Well congradulations! A nice rustfree Festiva! We can help you get it going.

Yank the head off the aspire, have it refreshed and throw it on. Its superior to the festy head anyway.

If your valve cover won't come right off, turn the engine over briefly and check to see if it will come off. The valve rockers need to move a bit and your cover will then clear the throttle body and come right off.

Don't be like me and spend a half hour filing on the valve cover and throttle body bottom.

          Thanks you two!
I'll try to remove it when I get off work tonight

I just cleaned the interior and windows and its near perfect! Nothing missing or broken, few stains, small driver's seat tear.

Does it have any oil in it? Just a thought.

How much does a Festiva take?

Thanks. I'm going to pull the valve cover anyway though because the car smokes BAD and there was oil coming out of the throttle body.

Dude its easy to remove the valve cover you will need to remove a bolt that is located to your right side (its like next to the thermostat) move that bolt will give your valve cover more room to wiggle around.

I got the valve cover off. Wasn't that difficult.
There's nothing obviously wrong, but I don't know that much about engine internals.
                      Pictures are here:

I removed the spark plugs to make the engine easier to turn by hand. Each plug had fresh liquid oil on it. Also, as I turned the engine, smoke would come out of the spark plug holes and the engine was ambient temp- hadn't been run in well over 6 hours.

Is it possible the timing belt jumped teeth or that the timing is just off?
The rockers all appeared to move as they should. I was turning the crank very slow though, so I'm not really sure.

can you describe the color of the oil? The engine looks fairly clean, it may very well just need a new head gasket. If so that is not a bad deal you got there.

The oil doesn't look bad, doesn't look like there's coolant in it.
The coolant kinda has a rainbowy shine to it, but still looks green.
My dad followed me yesterday and said the smoke looked more white and didn't have a super strong oil smell- "like it was all oil."
I think the head gasket is blown, but would that alone cause no idle, and rough, noisy running? The car had no power yesterday, especially in 2nd or 4th gears and topped out at 55, but would slowly loose speed down to 30 at one point. It never overheated but the temp gauge did climb up to about 3/4 a few times.

I don't have the knowledge, equipment, or time for a full engine swap.

Going to check the air filter now.
