I have a B6 and it idles at 500 rpm.
Why can't you set your idle lower?
That is a question I would like to know the answer to. It won't go much lower than 950 rpms because the idle mix screw bottoms out.
Also the factory spec for the idle of a B6 SOHC is like 700-800 rpms, according to clubprotege at least.

I'll so use the sound recorder on my phone and see if I can get a clear enough sound of the engine running when warmed up.

Is that a knock I hear? I couldn't hear that when recording it, but I think I hear something like a knock on the video.

      Timing is probably too off.

      • I hear a knock too . Sounds like my Escort does. It needs a new bottom end. Hope yours isn't that.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

        • Not directly festiva related but i FINALLY fixed my roof.... The garage has been leaking for a couple years now which has always haunted me with all the projects I get into.... So it's a great feeling knowing my festiva won't get rained on even when it's under a roof

          • finally got my car safety and emissions inspected.
            passed with flying colors.

i really hate it when other people i dont know drive my vehicle.
but state law requires a test drive.

and it felt like my clutch needed an extra .5in extra pedal movement for to engage.
even though i specifically told him our cutches are smaller than our hand and to go easy on it.
seems anyplace ive ever had pull in my aspires they over rev the engine and just roast my clutch and it wont move.
then they tell me clutch is bad even if it was just replaced arghhh!!!!

usually i pull in and out now and bring my keys with me.
but the state safety inspection theres no way around it.

I don't think it is the motor, I just have the timing way off probably.

Timing mark on the pulley is on the edge of the scale. I will put it back into factory spec tomorrow since I don't know what would be the proper timing for 93 Octane, which is what I filled it up with last.

              • Yes, something was banging loudly before you kicked her down. Reset the timing and report back please. Are you measuring idle speed with a tach/dwell meter or the tach in your cluster?

Cluster. Also went and put it back to -6 on the timing scale, which I believe is 6 degrees BTC. I don't think I hear it anymore, but the engine doesn't feel like it has any grunt anymore. Also to achieve the 6 degrees BTC, the dizzy had to be turned all the way toward the firewall.

I am starting to think the timing belt is off a tooth, but I lined up everything and checked and it doesn't seem to be. I mean that would be the perfect explanation, high idle, dizzy has to be turned to the extreme for the timing mark on the pulley to line up with factory spec, and lack of power when on factory specs.

                    Also, new video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6tgseS6V9Q

                    • Correct. Pull off your timing case cover and check. The distributor should never bottom out on the timing adjustment.

Look to see which direction the vacuum advance is pulling it. That's advance.
