Costs me $300 a year for my backup Festy (ins and tags) but prevents me from having to drive one of our guzzlers if my DD is down. I can also take my time on a repair or upgrade. Probably not worth it moneywise, but I hate to see them sit. I rotate them.

She won't sit in the one I have much less drive it.
It wouldn't sit. I would rotate them.
The one I have needs work! Oil seals needs replaced. Bad oil leaks. I'm using lots of oil. Can't work on it because NO backup.

Do I just not pay for the insurance for the car that sits there? How much extra would insurance be on a extra festiva?

call your insurance company & see what your grace period is for switching your tag over to another car would be(usually 24 hours) depending on what state you live in. My first festy with liability & uninsured motorist is 22.00 a month and my second festy added on is another 14,00 a month.

you could always get bonded insurance, where are insured on everything you drive and its attached to you and not your car.

You both have valid points, you need to weigh them out and decide whats best for you.

I think having a second Festiva is a must. Cars not only break down, but they also need to be fixed sometimes, and sometimes the fix takes longer than a day.

I have three and two-thirds Festivas, but only two are insured at a time.

Cheaper to get a second Festiva to bring up to speed as a DD so you can take your current DD down for repair, than to take your current DD in to a "mechanic" to repair it for you! Once a Festiva is brought back up to operational status it usually require very little maintenance. But these car's are approaching 20 yrs old, and many were not well treated, thus extensive repairs are needed, but they are still more reliable than many new cars on the road.
