And even though I prefer manual this car isn't that bad.
When we drove on across state trips it got up to 36 mpg at between 70-90mph
It has a 1.8l dohc variable valve technology that nets it %100 volumetric efficiency and its heavier.
And my aspire would avg 34-36mpg and only gets %85 volumetric efficiency with a 1.3l and less heavy vehicle.
Technology is bringing newer automatics better power and efficiency you'd be suprised
I still prefer a manual anyday though.
Thing is, there is an offset to better fuel economy with newer automatics.

    Lazier drivers.

Cars are becoming too easy to drive, so people are doing more, and more things behind the wheel than they should be.

Even when there are laws in place for it, cops are never around to see it, and if they are, they usually don't give it a second thought unless they are weaving or doing something wreckless, because that just means more paperwork for them. From what I heard, for simple speeding tickets, a cop has to do about a half-hours worth of paperwork at least.

I guarantee there would be far fewer people on cell phones, doing their make-up, eating, etc, if they had to drive a manual. Which of course requires both hands at all times, unless you are on the highway, but at those speeds you should be using both hands on the steering wheel anyway. Of course you would still have the few people that would still try, and attempt it.

Dang! That's pretty good. I must have a problem in my system. Cause if I'm going over 70 I'm not hitting 40mpg.

I do mixed but mostly 60+ and 70+ cruising.

I'm getting repeated 47mpg+ tanks. I almost wonder if I have leaned out the cruise AFR by the way the VAF is clocked. I know it affects idle noticeably. You can see this yourself if you loosen the clamp at the VAF and twist it to different orientations while idling. Mine is clocked so that gravity is pulling the door shut more than stock. IDK, but 47+ mpg is flippin' sweet so I'm leaving it for now.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

My argument in favour of manual trannys has nothing to do with how wonderfully more fuel efficient automatics are supposedly becoming (such as dual clutch versions which really are auto manuals).
Autos cannot be jump, tow or push-started meaning you're downright 'dead in the water' when it's so GD cold the starter won't turn over fast enough, a battery is low, solenoid or starter has quit, flywheel has suddenly lost a few teeth, etc etc.
I might have bought into auto tranny technology years ago had there been provisions for an emergency starter crank like on the old 'tin lizzies'.

Well I was a little disappointed but still happy with last night. 253 miles & over 40 stops through 5 counties and I averaged 38mpg with very windy 38 deg weather. I'm gonna keep pushing the envelope and see what I can achieve. On a funny side note in East Troy WI & was followed by a all white "UN-Marked" Challenger with dark windows. I knew it was a cop who thought I was drunk, but I was actually just looking for my 5 houses in his town. Every time I'd stop he would disappear & magically appear again once I started to my next home. It was so UN-nerving having him shadow my every move for over 25 min. Finally I pulled into a gas station and went in to piss and chill. I could see him cruising around on the street and he finally drove right up to the window when I was buying soda.drool I then went and sat in my car and watched for him for @ 10 min. After not seeing him anymore I'm like I know he's watching me. So I'm gonna go in the direction I last saw him drive away! I got about a hundred feet from the gas station & there he was hiding at the Bank teller drive through lane! So I was like WTH I'm gonna go introduce myself and my Aspire and see if he shoots us. He jumped out of his car and said what the "Heck are you doing, your freaking me out right now"!? I told him about my inspections and he said "Nope, you a drunk driver"! Then he smiled at me and said that was some good drunk driving Mr Aspire! I couldn't get you to make one mistake! I just knew you where doing the typical "Drunk Evasion thing",but you wouldn't make the smallest mistake."You really freaked me out, but I'll stop following you now"! I told him I thought Aliens where trying to abduct me in a white Chrysler with blacked out windows. And I was about to call 911 but knew they would think I was drinking. That made him smile and he said he'd look for me next month and wave.

Milton FYI You can run much larger tire dia on your ATX Festy for better gas mileage & engine life. The ATX Spire's & Festy's are waaaaay overgeared. I'm runnung 14" oversized on my ATX Whitey and love em. I'm actually going to purchase new ones from thetirerack.com that even larger dia. If you have a healthy engine you still will have lots of "Yank" on the highway.

Gotta agree there! I was running 175/70-13s (23 inch diameter VS 21" for 145/80-12) for awhile and never noticed any appreciable loss of power at highway speeds with my MTX.

Air temps helped me eek out 62.63mpg on my last tank. To the original poster all I can say is if you leave 5-10minutes earlier you can drive 55-60mph and probably get 45-50 mpg

So I ran 5 gallons (from chugging) in my Auto this weekend. Absolute gentle driving, very little throttle (going about 44-47MPH up hills, 56+ down in neutral). Engine off at stops.

202 miles before I ran out of gas again. 40.4MPG from an auto, baby! Yay.
