I typically get mid 40's driving fairly normal and about a 50/50 mix of Highway and city. I'm sure I could get 50 but I don't want to be a hazard to anybidy or myself. Synthetic gear (ATF) oil seemed to help a little and keeping fresh plugs and filters also seemed to help. Of course, the biggest contributor is the driver. Accelerate smoothly and brake smoothly. Timing those traffic light (starting a car from a dead stop takes a lot more energy than accelerating a slow moving one). Basically, driving responsibly will help your mileage -
Funny thing - One the radio in Philly (KYW, if I remember right) they reported on a study done by some college students. Basically the bigger the SUV the more aggressive the driver. Or as I like to paraphrase - "The bigger the SUV, the bigger the A$$HOLE". Driving as much as I do, I can see why SUV are gas hogs. I think it is more the driver though, than the equipment - LOL!

Yeah I get 29 mpg average on my BP swap with higher geared tranny, and that is with regular 100 mph bursts. I bet if I could drive at a regular speed I would get 35 mpg easy. Hehe

Yeah, but where's the fun in that???

ive never really driven the festiva with the idea of optimum mileage in mind.
im usually running late and drive at least the speed limit. but i still used to get 40 in town consistently.

i go slower at night on the rural 2 lane highways where you have to dodge the critters so frequently. funny my big 88 toyota 4x4 van seems more nimble at avoiding the animals than the festiva. guess i need the aspire swap.

I love Flagstaff, that was 89mi of pretty much constant engine breaking.
I remember going into Flagstaff in my '76 Chevette back in '82 going to Gunsite for my first pistol class. Miles and miles of downhill!!

That was fun, and fast. Even in a 1400cc Chevette!

Do Festivas cutoff fuel to the injectors when coasting/engine braking? I did not know this.
