      Sounds like the vacuum advance is bad to me too. You should get a vacuum pump (mityvac or similar) then check the can on the distributor .. the one with two hoses connected to it. Make sure that it holds vacuum and does not leak air. Unfortunately the part is hard to find and expensive as a new part. Good luck!

        im having sorta the same problem on my 88 l im changing my dist. in a few days and i will let you all know if it is resolved or any other update on it if i can get one

          Starter fluid will work. Actually anything flammable will work.
