the b3 produces its peak hp at 5200 rpm, i think, been awhile since i checked a car magazines test table, after which it falls off pretty sharply, my machine shop told me that the stock motors start to float at 6000 rpm, there is an article on fms about a festiva car and driver built back in 89, and taking it past 5800 rpm was pointless because the carb starved for fuel, especially while cornering. driving mine i never take them past about 5000 rpm, mostly because the exhaust note goes flat, and in my experience, if the tone goes flat, youre no longer making power, shift it.

Look at the HP & torque v.s. RPM charts of any engine. Once the HP curve starts dropping at a given RPM, what's the point of going deeper in to the danger zone?

BTW, does anyone have the curves for the B3?

B-Series' tend to do this, once the valves float...



Been there, done that.

that's not valve float, that's detonation and i can see evidence of it in cyls 1 & 2 as well. what'smore likely to have happened was the detonation was severe enough to chunk the valves and cause what you see there. if our valves DO float (and they don't till about 8k), then nothing really happens as our engines are NON-interferance engines.

visual evidence suggests a lean condition highly concentrated in the failed cylinder, probably due to a combination of a partially clogged injector coupled with an intake air leak.

174,000+mile B6, second gear, 60mph downhill. Repeatedly bounced off the rev limiter. The whole head of the valve was missing.
