  • Something running after engine shutoff

On my 93 Automatic, when I turn off the engine something is continuing to run. When I listen for it and put my ear near the throttle body thats where it sounds like its coming from. Almost sounds like a tiny fan running. Any ideas?

as far as i know there isn't any kind of electrical motor inside the intake, sounds kinda weird

I beleive on those fuel injected models there is a squirrel inside a cage with a wheel in it. The squirrels they use are often not too bright or not well trained. So yours could keep running after you turn off the ignition.

        Mine was...
When the key is in the on position, there is a whirring sound, like a little fan.
Move the key back one spot to the accessory position, and it stops.

        Always did that.

          maybe the fuel pump

Does the fuel pump work and pressurize the fuel lines and then bleed back through the return line when the key is in the on position?

It runs fine all be it a little rich. Im gonna give it a full tune up. Is it possible that it could be the TPS?
Well I disconnected that. Still had the noise.
I havent checked the fuel lines. I didnt think of that because its running good. Like I said it seems a bit rich. But who knows when it was tuned up last.

right it won't run but I believe there's a switch in there that let's the pump run if the vane doesn't close all the way. an the key's on. I think he's doin this keyon. if not sounds like a bad ignition switch

I would check a couple of things:

....the IAC conected tot he intake manifold near the starter....should not be running but disconnecting will prove such.

...the fuel pump may be running and the sound you hear is fuel passing thru the regulator...best to disconnect the fuel pump relay.

...hot water may be passing thru either the heater lines or the IAC lines...pinch the lines to see if you can eliminate the noise or change the pitch of the noise.

...open up - disconnect the PCV valve and see if the pitch of the sound changes.

                        Best of luck!!!

This sound starts as soon as I connect the battery. No key in the ignition.
But Im going to check everything suggested. Thanks all.

Hmmm, I noticed this on my B6 tonight as well Monsoon. Just as you were describing, it came from the upper intake/throttle body area. Sounded like a tiny fan running in there. I think mine is running a tad rich right now just as yours is.

One thing you can do to narrow down where the sound/vibrations are coming from, is to take a LONG screwdriver and place in on different parts of the engine and listen to the handle, sometimes you can also feel the vibrations. this might not work for some situations, but it's something to try that might help. Happy hunting!
