Before replacing the ICM you can take it to some auto parts streos where they will test it for free. When I started my car after replacing the ICM it bucked. I turned off the engine, waited, and started again no problem since. For some info on the ICM look in

I removed my dist cap and noticed some type of oil on the bottom part of the dist cap. I cleaned it out, but is this a problem?

Not sure about the oil in the cap... possibly oil getting in there from leaking valve cover gasket?

On mine the coil checked out ok. It was the ignition control module. I changed the distributor, set the timing, and now it runs great! What an ordeal... glad it's over.

            The saga continues

After 2 days of flawless running - it shut off on the highway & won't restart. Got a ride to work & will have car towed to my house tonight. Will check for spark etc.

Replaced the Engine (cracked block), distributor, cat converter, wires, plugs, ignition system, triple checked vacuum lines, rebuilt the carb, and rebuilt another carb I got from the junkyard, replaced fuel pump and filter. Also replced the radiator, water pump and timing belt, just to name a few things - LOL. It still hesitated and bucked in 2nd gear ran rough when cruising and basically made me hate it! Eventually I replace the 02 sensor and viola! it ran great. I'm not saying the 02 sensor will fix all problems, but you will never get to run worth a crap with a bad one.
Zoe, perhaps this may be my problem. Is an O2 sensor difficult to replace?

Clintorino, The O2 sensor is very easy to replace. It unscrews from the front exhaust pipe & has one electrical connector.

Looks like my problem is that the needle & seat in the carb is stuck & dumping fuel into the carb.

for instance, my car takes 10 secs to start.. hesitates when i press on the gas for a min... then clears up. once i put it into gear, if i hammer on the gas im ok, but if i gradually press on the gas, it will hesitate some... does this sound like something an O2 sensor may be causing?

Yesterday I figured I finally solved the problem. The carb seems great. It sits & idles better then ever. I took it for a 5 minute drive & it ran great too.
Today I drove it to work: about 3 miles down the road it seemed to start some minor bucking under load. Just as I drove onto the parking lot at work, it shut off & would not restart. I checked: it was getting gas but the new needle & seat were not sticking. I waited an hour, went out & it started right up but had a flat spot just past idle. I eased the gas past that spot & revved the engine & the flat spot went away. I guess I need to check the hot fuel pressure & figure out how to test the ignition module when hot too.

                      Any other suggestions?

When I had replaced everything but the 02 sensor, It would start and run great except that it would hesitate in 2nd gear, and had a miss at highway speeds. Usually when I would first start to press the gas pedal. You probably have other problems as well.

                            Finally fixed...

I changed the spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, and coil. Now it runs as good as new. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be good for a long time now.

                            Thanks everyone!

Check if the terminals at the coil are dirty or rusted.

Have you checked all of your vacumn lines? You could have knocked one off, or loosened one. ,Just a thought,
