  • No Headlights

Sometime during the swap of headlights and the install of my tach cluster, I've lost my headlights...

    Things I've noticed:
    - The fusible link looks ok. Swapped in one of the cartridge style fuses and still nothing.

    - The parking lights come on, the headlight buzzer in the cluster buzz, and I can hear the relay "click" when I turn the switch off.

    - The high beam light on the cluster will not light up when flicked forward to the high beams, or when pulled back.

Suggestions on where to start? Is there a relay on each side of the engine bay or just one?

I am pretty sure it's the relay. I guess it could be that both headlights happened to burn out at the same time, but I don't know that I buy that, haha...

I don't have my Hayne's manual anymore... So, I can't check there first for the wiring diagrams.

I did some searching, but nothing came back difinitive about where the relay(s) were located.

Ok Book shows only two relays one behind the batt one is headlight and the parking is on the pass fender. there is a possibility of three relays behind the batt order from headlight to cowl daytime running (CAN ONLY), Headlamp, Cooling Fan - so if its a us car then it should be the furthest forward of the two that are there.

Ok under the troubleshooting hints for your condition (loosely defined)
Check 12V on Red wires at Headlamp relay (C141)
Disconect Relay C141, apply 12V to White wire
If headlights illuminate check Headlamp relay
          In no, check headlamp switch

Hope that gives you direction - I just dealt with this on the latest car - it was the relay

            OK,
            electrical and Vacuum trouble shooting manual says;
"On fender Apron behind left (driver-side) headlight"

It is in a cluster of two and is the one most forward toward the headlight.
The other is the cooling fan relay.

If you need it, I can scan the diagram and email to you.

Tuner, unless I miss interpreted your post, I think the relays we are speaking of are forward of the battery and behind the headlight(divers-side).
              Me thinks.

My book said the same as yours and considering that is the relay I just replaced

Can you upload it with a post? You may need to downsize a little bit to make it work.

Tuner, your right, just went out to see for myself.
Unless they're stuffed into the hole in the engine bay to fender, I don't see them in the location the manual says.
See the main relay, but the other two are covered or located elsewhere.
Might be better to get a pic of the actual location.

let me go snap a pic of them

Ok I didnt remove the Batt but you will want to to make it eaisier

You will need to remove the coolant overflow and the main relay to get it

It was eaisiest for me was to pull the headlight so I could get some of the wires out of the way. You will also want to pull some slack out of the core support (at least on mine i did) and remove the first couple cable zips so you can move the engine harness out of the way. the relay is heald on with short number 2 philips head screw on both that I removed I had to spray PB blaster to get the screw to come out

excuse the dirt I live on a gravel road

Ive said it before and Ill say it again because this comes up fairly often. The 91 - 96 Escort relay WILL work. Theres just a little tab that you have to break off the relay in order for it to fit properly.
