tapping sound coming from head

my grandfathers 93 has developed a tapping sound that speeds up as you accelerate. im thinking its something to do with the valves , the car seems to be running fine , just with a tapping. any ideas guys ? thanks

Sounds like an HLA is stuck/collapsed

What grade engine oil are you using? Mine was doing the same and 15w-40 took care of it. However, it doesn't get that cold here.

hla ? not sure the grade of oil , he had it changed at texaco , but he said it was tapping before. weve got 2 spare motors so ive got plenty of spare parts if need be.

i believe they have it wrong---only 1990 and up use them and/or fuel injected models

isnt 15w-40 a little to thick for these engines? mine has the same tapping sound but i was just going to use 10w-30 but if 15w-40 it ok to use and it helps the tapping noise im going to change weight....

In the Subaru world this is known as the TOD (tick of death). But not to worry too much. Try cleaning out the motor with Sea Foam. Add it to the oil, idle it for ten minutes or so, drain the oil and change oil/filter.
