From rapid city south Dakota the problem is that it runs great and then it spits and sputters sometimes dies first thing I did was changed spark plugs wires power unit fuel filter new fuel lines battery and we checked the fuel pump fuel tank and everything else non electrical for the fuel system part i also had the idle speed adjusted and no results. The problem is that it jumps some times but not all time I take it in to a mechanic and it does nothing wrong. Did that test for codes on the check engine light and came up with code 2 and found a book that labeled it as crankshaft position sensor or idm (identity theft management) witch as far as I know is an anti theft system right?

one of the Festiva's came with anti theft devices, so CPS is more likely, although as I was reading, I was thinking it sounded like a throttle position sensor....
I do believe the CPS is part of the distributor...Contact me for information about Festiva Madness!

code 2
Code 02 (two short output signals) is the crank angle sensor.
Code 20 (two long output signals) is injector #3
For 02
1. Check distributor circuit for poor connection
2. Check if code No. 03 is also present
3. Check ECU terminal 31 (B/LG) to ground for continuity
4. Check if battery voltage exists at distributor terminal B when ignition switch on
5. Check terminal wire between distributor terminal and ECU terminal 33 for continuity
6. Check if ECU terminal 33 voltage is O.K.
7. Check if 0V or 5V exists at distributor terminal C
8. Check if 5V exists at ECU terminal 33. (with distributor connector disconnected)
Note: Step 7 involves replacing your distributor and step 8, replacing your ECU. Let's hope it doesn't get to that.

"Identity theft management" sounds to me like VIN numbers put in some out of the way places. I have never heard of any factory anti-theft features (besides the normal key locks) for Festivas.
Nope. I googled "ford idm" and got this thread from another forum:
IDM is "injector driver module."

Would an IDM be in each injector or a separate part?

I think from what is being posted that it is a module that controls the injectors"FLTG4LIFE" @FINALLEVEL , "PBH"
