So some of you may have been watching or posting in my thread about installing this carb. Well, it ran fine last night but when I went to fire it up today, it was doing the same old crap it used to. So, I pop the hood to check everything out, and find the the "gasket" or conversion gasket or whatever the hell it is called is made of what appears to be a couple of pieces of clip-board material. Well, it absorbed a lot of fuel, and now it is just leaking out all over the manifold, and somehow is even going through the vacuum tubes to the disty! So is the disty shot now? What the hell am I supposed to do about the makeshift gasket? I have attached a picture to show you what I am talking about! Like this on both sides BTW...

Go to any McParts store and buy gasket material for gas stuff. A piece that small should not be more than $3. Comes in different thicknesses also.Chuck

Yeah, skip the cork, Also pick up a paper punch, and an exacto knife at the office supply store so you can make some excellent cuts which = excellent gaskets.
And stop whining...if you were building a house and you bent two nails in a row, would you stop building the house?Last edited by iceracerdude; 03-29-2011, 03:21 PM.

The gaskets and spacer blocks between the carb and the intake are regular auto part store parts for a Ford Escort 1.6L engine. Below is a picture of the spacer block like the one on your intake. There is a black paper type gasket on each side of the spacer block that were purchased from an auto parts store. They are not home made gaskets made out of junk material.
I think you have a high pressure fuel problem with your fuel pump. The fuel pump is pumping fuel under too much pressure so that the carb float valve can't stop the flow and the carb is being overfilled with gas causing it to run out the top and all over. Try blowing air through the return line that connects to the fuel pump. If that line is not open back to the gas tank, it can't relieve the excess pressure from the fuel pump and the carb will overflow. If the line is open, get a pressure gauge that only goes from 0 to about 20 pound maximum and connect it to the hose that goes to the carb. Try to start the car. It should run for a little bit with the fuel that is in the carb. Watch the pressure gauge. If it goes much higher than 3 or 4 psi, you have too much pressure going to the carb and it is not going to run right. You will probably need another fuel pump if you are sure the return line is open to the gas tank. You gonna race that thing?

I saw a part # on it, but at the parts store they said they can't find it anywhere, and they don't think they have ever seen a thick spacer like that. I am in no way trying to bad-mouth you festy46. If that is the way you took it, I am sorry for that. Like I said, they can't find anything like that, and they seemed to think it was made for something else and cut to fit or something... I don't know really what they think, but they tell me they don't carry anything like that. I checked on the cork gasket, and they either don't recommend it or it is only 1/16 of an inch thick. I also asked about using a steel spacer like a lot of people on here use, but they said they wouldn't recommend that either. So it's like you don't recommend anything you have and don't carry anything you recommend. The normal is not always normal... MOST is not ALL... And any job can be hard if you don't have the right tools!!!

I would def. check the pressure & is the gasket in the airstream of the intake charge?
How much are you torquing it down?...then again, even if something is warped, there is a problem with the fuel being there to begin with, not just the gasket sealing itself.

Without going into a big explanation, I would not buy the first one with the open center. The second one will probably work, but email the guy and ask him to give you the dimensions for the bolt pattern to make sure it will fit, (although I think it will probably fit). Before you buy one from eBay, check with your local Ford dealer and see if they have a spacer/insulator carb block for an '82 to '85 Escort with a 1.6 L engine. You gonna race that thing?

Doyle, that first link is EXACTLY like what comes with a NEW Weber carb
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/WEBER...Q5fAccessories
If you need a spacer, you can have mine, since I have a custom adaptor and didnt use it. PM me your address and i'll send it if you want it. For gasket material, the regular gasket material, available at any parts store, looks sorta like grey cardboard, works just fine, and is what I used with no problems. I am wondering why you have so much fuel leaking. Check pressure as stated before, and also, is the carb mounting surface flat? I'd want to pull the carb and check for that, and look for any cracks, on manifold and carb base. Good luck!Last edited by drddan; 03-31-2011, 10:16 AM.Dan
