  • Bp swap overheating

Finally started driving the grey festy today and within 15 minutes it started getting really close to overheating. The rad. Fan wasn't running so I unplugged it to stay on constantly (that's how it was when I got the car btw). Anything I'm missing out on with the bp swap/rad fan/temp sensor etc. I don't want to miss the upcoming 4thtiva meet so please help a brother out! Also, I did do a quick search but I'm in a rush to get to work and couldn't read through all posts.

If you can't get it figured out then just wire up a toggle switch for the fan. KB motors couldn't get it to work so he just did that.

Don't believe there's any bubbles in the rad, and the engine itself is pretty fresh. I'll be removing the thermostat for now to keep the coolant flowing

what thermostat temp do you have? i know B3's had 185 and 195 F thermostats, but don't know about BP.

Cody, how are you measuring temp? I wouldn't trust the stock temp gage. When i put my bp in the gage was high. I swapped in the sensor (in thermostat housing) with my festy one(started reading normal). I also have a mechanical gage.

If you keep your hand on your rad hose and rev the motor does the hose expand?

If so there's pressure in your coolant system (usually head gasket)

Why not run the fan on a toggle, or constant I might just do that with my swap, but I live in S FL it's always 90 + degrees

X2 On what Greg said I've heard that the Festiva temp sensor is accurate

Not really sure since I didn't do any work on this myself.

I was just going by the stock temp. gauge.....when I drove it from Mark's house to my mom's (about an hour), the temp needle never went past halfway. Yet today it went almost to the red in a 15 minute drive. Might need to swap the sensor I guess.

I'll try this out. Hopefully it's not the head gasket!

You may want to check the temp sensor on the head, if not I have had several that I have just hooked up a toggle switch.

Also, was your 15minute run with or without the fan running continuously?

Not sure about the temp sensor on the head, or how to tell if it's working. The 15 minute run was with the fan plugged in, so it wasn't running. When I got home I popped the hood and saw the fan wasn't running so I pulled the plug and it came on. Also, the car feels like it's lacking power and kinda bogs down when I shift gears. I'm gonna do everything I can to make it to 4thstiva and hopefully some of you more knowledgeable mechanic minded people will be willing to test drive it and see if you notice anything. Oh, I'm also definitely gonna need to do a coolant flush.....i put fresh coolant in not too long ago and it's already dookie brown!

sounds like a headgasket, especially if its mixing oil and coolant like that.

he said brown, not thick and milkshake like. i would suspect the fresh coolent has released some scale and rust from the system and is keeping it in suspention (like it should).

what's your timing look like and are you running an auto rad or manual rad? (should run an auto rad).

Yeah, the coolant is just dirty from rust, no oil in it. The timing should be good....it was way off to begin with but Mark fixed that before I brought the car home from his place. I believe I have the stock manual rad. Was thinking of getting one of the sweet civic aluminum radiators though

Your rad might just be clogged. A new one cured my Festy's overheatig problem.
