my aspire used to do the same thing, when i first got it, the idle was perfect, before i got rid of it, it had the same symptoms as what shadetree describes.... so how could the base idle change if it was never adjusted?

Check for a vacuum leak also.

^^Vacuum leak would be something i would check for, mainly since the engine was changed, maybe a missed vacuum line etc. maybe its just something simple like that

one would think that an open vac line would create a high idle situation (small vac leak after the TB).

^^still could create an idle issue either way........ when i first fired up my V6, i had major vacuum leaks (which i was aware of, just wanted to hear it fire lol) and the idle was up and down and wouldn't idle at all

ok, was just typing and errased everything because i just remembered we're talking about a 97 aspire which has a crank position sensor!!!!

check the sensor gap and make sure the pick-up isn't covered in debris.....!!!!!

But what are the chances both sensors (old and new engine) have the same clearance issues?

I was just thinking vac leak because I changed a head gasket on a Cavalier and cracked the EGR tube which fed into the intake after the TB and it had a surging idle with no load in park but when in drive there was no surging just a tad higher idle speed.

what if the sensor was swapped over to the new engine and the sensor bracket was tweaked before the swap? taking a wild guess here, but i know that too large a gap will cause the issue described.

Okay crank position sensor is a possibility . The old engine didn't even have one but the new engine did and the car is wired for one . The old engine had the same issue , I'm not sure how it even ran . It was a junk yard install . Even thou it didnt have it before and could be out of adj now so that might be it ..
Thanks all !! First thing in the morning ill ck it , and report back
New build on the way .

Are you using the same intake manifold from the old engine?

Edit: Sorry, didn't notice the post where you swap the complete engine in.
