the problem is that the noise happens so rarely that i cant diagnose it like that. i could sit there for an hour and hear it 10 times, or maybe once. and the shrot time that it makes the sound for is barely enough to see where it is coming from.

i started it for about a minute. didnt make the noise but i noticed that while it is running there is a pretty steady drip of oil under the car from this spot

I Dunno? Valve Cover Gasket leaking till it runs down the motor? Oil pan Gasket? Its really hard to tell from that pic. Get 2 cans of engine brite.Use em up,let it sit as long as possible. Then wash it with a plant sprayer filled with hot water. Drive it around, come home & look for fresh leaking oil.
Anyone got a better idea? Please help em out.

its leaking so fast it should be easy to see where it is coming from. ill have to get it in the shop soon. it i had to guess, it seems like its coming from the rear main. not sure how it started leaking so fast though

Some times its deceptive, like a leak in your ceiling.Just make sure its not leaking from the top. That would suck replacing the rear main, only to still have the same leak. But it sounds like you have a good handle on it.

still confused about how a leak could start so fast and what the grinding noise is

If that long shiny thing on the left is the exhaust then the leak is at the front of the engine block?

They may not be related. How much oil are you having to add? Intermittant grinding noise could be anything. Its human nature to think its the worst (rear main). Thats all I'm saying,I'm on your team with my fingers crossed
When it starts grinding again, pull over asap & try to get under the car.Maybe then you can isolate it a little better.

i looked under the hood seconds after the grinding noise happened and i saw nothing. my car is next to impossible to get under on the side of the road.

i havnt added any oil. the leak just started and ive stopped driving it. the oil is still halfway full.

I still say check the valve cover and the distributor real close.

I'm thinking low transmission fluid. I think the gears sit in a pool of fluid and spray themselves with it as they turn. If the fluid is low they might not be getting enough sometimes and start to complain? You have to remove the speedometer cable housing to check the fluid level.

Only way to truly know is by pulling it apart, but if its leaking from in between the tranny and engine, it's either the rear main seal or a hole in your tranny, but since you say it's not tranny fluid, my guess is rear main

But on a quick side note, when my diff pin put a hole in my bell housing, after the tranny fluid mixed with the clutch dust in the bell housing, it came out looking like old motor oil, so i initially thought my rear main seal went...... just my 2 cents
