It is easier with just the cups because the axle tends to cock the joint especially if you have no helper.

I take my first prybar, usually a 2 foot crow bar, and just tie it off in place with a small strap (not too tight, not enough to set up a bind, just enough to hold it in place) then I place the second bar and give it a sharp rap with a hammer.

How did you get that cup to float in the air like that in the third picture?

Umm is that a serious question? it's resting on the tranny itself

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

I did what mikeand said. Light pressure with a prybar and gentle tapping with a small hammer on the bell and it will pop out like butter.

I once had an axle that was a be-otch to get out. I took the axle apart to the cup like in the picture. I put a two foot pry bar between the tranny and the cup. I then placed a block(2X4) over the cup and had a partner whack the block while I was prying up on the cup. It popped right out. I actually got the idea off this forum years ago.

                Wait, here's the actual shot!

It's one of my favorite "action" shots.

Putting the two crow bars down, then picking the camera back up, turning it on again, getting it focused and shooting...priceless!
