We have started taking the tranny off the car at 12-30 and got it back on the engine around and finished mounting the cross member at 6-30pm. Three of us Around 3pm it seems like we are going to a junk yard for a replacement tomorrow

We took that single gear off (the one on the left side of the pic, by taking the super-small pin which is sticking off the case edge in the bottom of the pic and another pin which is the pivot for the lower fork), we also took the shifting mechanism which is held by four 10mm bolts (not sure we were supposed to do that, and one of these bolts is a REAL pain). Then we used a mallet on the input shaft to move one of the gear assemblies up and this gave the over assembly enough play so that we were able to pull the differential off the case.

Hopefully we are putting axles in & starting the car tomorrow. I still do not believe this gearbox will shift, we will know tomorrow
Unfortunately it would not shift The box is stuck in some gear. It was fun taking it apart and putting it back together, but seems like we are going to a jink yard for a replacement on Saturday. Too much hassle putting the box back if there is a huge chance that it would not work.

Spending unnecessary money is never a good idea, give it another try it can be little dumb things that mess with you! Like dd you drive the "pins" you spoke of earlier too far in? Most of the time it will be something obvious!!!!

Bring the whole trans a few hours south, I can fix it. I have a cracked spare that still drove and shifted fine, I can piece it together for ya.

Make sure all the sliding gears are midway (neutral) before assembling the shift assembly. Be sure the shift assembly is in neutral.

The g is probably a bad syncro, I can take a look, but no spare parts for that one.

Can you please PM me the number? But I will probably just pull another one from a junk yard for now and keep this as spare.

They do not sell internal parts at retail part stores do they? What is a good source for spare syncros? Replacing them is not yet a rebuild, right? Anything else people replace while replacing 1st/2nd syncros?

How do I know they are in neutral? What about internal forks - should I put them into any particular position? I guess the only thing I can figure out is shift assembly neutral

IIRC Autozone can order a bearing and blocker ring kit, but I think that about all that comes in it.

I've only done motorcycle trans but any gear that slides back and forth the middle is neutral. It looks like from the pics I have seen of Festiva transmissions that the middle detent notch in the fork shaft is neutral.
