d that with all the confusing posts of people who don't have a clue what's going on. I have never had the gears move on me even with trannies that have had the axles removed and been stored for awhile and moved around alot. I have seen damaged splines on axles though, people getting too aggressive with a hammer and trying to force things.

Right. It is fixable, its just going to take a little time and patience.

Any key words or advice? Do I need to completely disassemble the gearbox? This idea makes me nervous.

Pay very close attention to detail. Basically find the "bolts" that go to nothing on the small end of the case, find a small magnet, remove the "bolt" really a cap, and use the magnet to remove the detent spewing and ball. There is a couple, lay it down on the bell housing after you get them all out and in a safe place. Remove all the bolts holding the 2 halfs, gently tap on the case to break the seal. Lift the top half off and set it aside. IIRC, you have to lift the pair of shafts out to remove the diff. If so, use something to keep them mated, a clean piece of rope, or ratchet strap, it will help you line it all back up putting all back. One you get the diff out, the gears should just kinda slide back in, kinda like a revolving door effect. Same time from opposite sides, the 4 gears should all be making contact. One you get them in place I use 2 large zipties, just a couple clicks after putting through to keep the gears from falling again. Then just reverse the disassembly. Make sure you clean all the old sealant off the case, don't be stingy with the rtv, but don't go crazy with it. After it starts to set up a little take a razor blade and shave off the extra that squwishes out. Before you put the detent balls back in, make sure the shift yoke, where the rod hooks up, is in neutral, all the shift rods visable in those holes should be in the center of the 3 notches. If not, use a screwdriver and gently move them to the center. Best of luck.

Yes, more pics, but I would want the exact car that transmission is out
of. If the type F I pictured did what you shot pictures of you have more
problems in that diff than just putting it back together. The picture
you took looks to be a different type F than what i was looking at.

this is stock tranny of my 93 efi festiva. So far I have only swapped the engine for BP - you can see oil pan partially ground off on the right of the passenger side pic.

Damage might be caused not only by me playing with axles but maybe by starting engine with tranny in gear without axles at all. I know I am an idiot.

so, I have opened the tranny - how do I lift the two shafts? is anything holding them from the bottom? they kinda play up and down maybe 1/4" inch but do not go further up

We did it! As shocking as it is, seems like we might have fixed it!

We have started taking the tranny off the car at 12-30 and got it back on the engine around and finished mounting the cross member at 6-30pm. Three of us Around 3pm it seems like we are going to a junk yard for a replacement tomorrow

We took that single gear off (the one on the left side of the pic, by taking the super-small pin which is sticking off the case edge in the bottom of the pic and another pin which is the pivot for the lower fork), we also took the shifting mechanism which is held by four 10mm bolts (not sure we were supposed to do that, and one of these bolts is a REAL pain). Then we used a mallet on the input shaft to move one of the gear assemblies up and this gave the over assembly enough play so that we were able to pull the differential off the case.

Hopefully we are putting axles in & starting the car tomorrow. I still do not believe this gearbox will shift, we will know tomorrow

I would recommend shifting it on the bench before you put it back in.

Wow, I should have read this before responding to your PM, lol.
Anyway, from what I remember, it would have been extremely hard to pull the diff without removing everything from the case. I hope you didn't bend anything!
