(panic mode) axles, transmission and differential gears

I was struggling to lock axles back into my stock manual transmission after an engine swap and at some point after multiple ins/outs/light hammering they have stopped even going inside as deep as they used to go in! It was 1/4" out while I was struggling and now it is 3/4" out! And as soon as I have realized things got worse I've got a flashback regarding Haynes manual, broom handles and "differential gears"

So, is that it? If it is, what do I do next? If it is not, what is it then?... As I said, panic mode here

Make sure you see gear teeth ,you might have rolled the dif and the gears dropped .

If the gear fell, you would able to see something missing. Make sure you are lining up the splines and not trying to hammer them in between splines. A little tip, the c-clip make sure the opening is at the bottom, that way it falls down into the groove and not hanging down. I've had the gear fall and you'll be able to just push the axle all the way in and it would be kinda sloppy, obviously wrong.

Fine, I am half kidding on the panic mode

You cannot really see a lot, I will maybe try a flashlight later. But I have tried sticking a finger into the tranny and there was a side of some gear in the middle of the hole - I think these gears on both sides are why the axle would not go in all the way, and nothing felt like the splines for the axle.

Are you supposed to feel the spindles inside the tranny if you dare to put a finger inside? If that's the dropper gear scenario, what is my next step?

I have tried both with and without the c-clip, it just would not go in for half an inch. Like most of the axle is inside but the last 1/2" would not go in. I believe spindles are longer than that anyway?

If you see both gear sets ,run a zip tie through the trans and around. Then your good for storage .

The axle should be touching the rubber seal at the opening when fully seated, I assume your using a rubber dead blow hammer on the end of the axle to try and seat it? If you don't have a rubber dead blow, use a block of wood and a big hammer with the help of a buddy, if you don't, you will destroy the threaded end and won't het the nut back on.

four hours ago axle would easily go up to 1/4" from the seal. Not any more - something has changed and now both of them have a 3/4" gap from the seal and they would not go deeper. have tried light hammering - no difference.

I would say, your going to have to get in there with a flashlight and get a good look, something isn't right.

I would stick my finger in it first !!! No need for a flashlight .

Go fishing around in there, hook it with your finger or some little tool
have something ready to poke through and hold it. Before you are through
you will think its as slippery as a fish!! Good luck!

An F series has lips on the side gears, if they move in and slide
down the spider bushings are worn out..Some one make sure
I did not misunderstand something here...
