  • Carburetor and Timing help

Almost everything under to hood is new or rebuilt, im getting 19.5 mpg over the past 3000 miles. I am willing to travel and pay to have someone help me tune this car so i can get better mpg. I was getting 31mpg out of my 1.6l. # 3 cylinder went out... put new engine in now i cant do better them 27 mpg at 50 mph. Please Help.

New engines require a 'wear-in' period with all new bearings and rings since everything will be tight. However I'm guessing your idea of 'new' engine is another used one. Vacuum leaks, or choke that doesn't disengage, is perhaps what you should be looking at for starters.

Yep new used engine from japan... about 85,000 on it now. Vacuum lines are all new. Carb was bought rebuilt from RockAuto.com. not sure how to check choke... idle is about 1100rpm. I dont think timing is set right. Im traveling non stop from coast to coast with no home or garage... im in atlanta miami area now. Thanks everyone.

Post your route. It might be near one of the carb guru's location.

If it is idling at 1100 rpm, the chances are the choke is part way on. When the car is at operating temperature, take off the air cleaner and see if the choke plate is straight up and down (wide open). If it is not wide open, that is probably where your mileage is going. Also make sure you have a clean air cleaner filter.
              You gonna race that thing?

Libricate exterior linkages - choke, throttle. Might help. Won't hurt. About 10 seonds after the engine starts giving the acclerator 2-3 taps is supposed to disengage the choke. The drop in idle speed is obvious.

Well if you are passing through NC at any leg of this trip you can stop here in Raleigh and I can have a look at it for you. Just let me know an approximate day and time and I can be sure to be around.

If you used the same exhaust manifold you might put in a new Denso o2
your old one had all kinds of bad gases going by it. Same line of thought
the CAT might have been damaged and now plugging up.

Disty timing and advance systems need to work properly.

Lots of adjustments on carb, choke and all idle speeds, idle mix
need to be set for the feedback to work right.

If you have no vacuum leaks find your decal and follow directions
for getting your idle down where it should be.

I am a little unclear on what you have..is it an 88 festiva that had
a 1.6 transplant and now has a jap spec long block with the 1.6
stuff put back in place and a lot of those parts were exchanged
                    for rebuilt?

If we start talking vacuum hose routing, specs ect we need to know
                    what to look up

There are a lot of members in the south too, you will get hooked up
                    before long.

Pretty cool wandering the country, do you have pics somewhere?
