If it on when you open the passenger door. I'm thinking maybe a bad wire to the door. Or maybe a wire to the dome light is bad.

Mine has a poor switch on it. Sometimes it works sometimes it don't. My passager side don't work. It's on my list to things to fix.

Try spraying the switch with WD-40 or electrical contact cleaner? If you have a volt meter or test light you can check if the wire is live.

that switch is a ground switch, it needs to have a clean contact to the chassis to make it work

Yeap. Just worked for mine. Unscrewed the two screws. Scraped around body and reconnected. Works like a charm.

Are we talking about cleaning the switch in the door or the switch in the light itself?

Open the door and look at the bottom rear of the door opening in the
car. Back where most of you are this probably rusts and makes a bad electrical
                  connection.

I give the light a good smack, Probably not your problem but the way those bulbs sit in they can bounce weird and get a poor contact surface.
