I think I may have discovered the cause of the squeak. I was checkinv things a little more and noticed that I had the spring for the timing bekt tensioner on the wrong way. If appears that the back edge of the timing belt was rubbing against the spring which in turn put some pressure on the belt, trying to push it off the sprockets.

I will put everything back together in the morning and see if the squeak is gone.

      Here'a couple of photos...

The top photo is the wrong way. The bottom is the right way.

A quick question. Does the little rubber cover for the tensioner spring have to be there? Mine got really chewed up so is not much use.

I'm not too happy right now. Put everything back together after cleaning all the bits and pieces, started the car, let it warm up and the squeak is still there.

So... I've ruled out water pump, alternator, and A/C compressor by running the car with no belts.

Timing belt tensioner is new and I made sure the belt isn't rubbing anywhere. Also made sure all the pulleys and spacers were in the right order.

Squeak starts after engine is warmed up and sounds metallic.

I took a short video and as soon as I get it uploaded I'll post the link.

It definitely sounds like a belt to me. The squeek is in time with the belts and not with the engine. I could play songs to it. :p

With such dark marks showing on the crank timing belt retainer, I want to say the timing belt is being forced against the retainer, and squeeking because of the force. Are the teeth on the CAM and CRANK pulleys in good shape? I am curious if the cam or crank pulleys are worn and tapered slightly.
How is the timing belt? Is it new or old?
Did you re-use an old timing belt? Maybe it is worn and tapered?
Try turning the timing belt around, so the side that was to the front, is to the back.

My old 250,000+ mile B3 didnt have marks that bad on the crank timing belt retainer. I'd be looking for timing gears/timing belt issues.

Squeak started after replacing water pump. I used the old timing belt and tensioner. Neither the crank gear nor the cam gear were touched.

Replaced the timing belt and tensioner... squeak still there.

I'm going to find a better timing belt guide and see if that does the trick.

Whiff some carb cleaner onto the timing belt while it is running to see if it goes away
                  for a few seconds.

The frequency only matches one bad spot on a belt or dry rocker under valve cover.
The lack of rise and fall to the intensity points to a belt. The frequency, again, points
away from any tensioner or pulley, they would repeat many times during one belt
revolution, this noise only happens once per belt revolution. It is normal for a belt to
have one spot that is a few thousands further in both directions, where the side can
push to hard on a pulley guide. The cause of that is an idler or tensioner not quite
square. Did a bolt get loosened and tightened on one of these? Are the threads worn
enough that every time you touch it it gets worse?
This kind of thing is very hard to see by eye but you should see something that makes
you suspicious of the right culprit.

                    SUCCESS!

A big thank you to jfro and afro who provided a replacement timing belt guide. Threw that on and no more squeak!

Thanks to everyone who posted in this thread too!

I had the exact same issue, chased it and chased it. After the old belt stripped about 15 teeth one night coming really late. After I installed a new gates belt, the noise never returned. How old/worn is your belt? I also installed a new tensioner at the same time. My washer had the same exact markings, I used scotch-brite pad and removed the shine off it.
Im not driving a Festiva because I'm poor. I drive a Festiva because i want to!
