    A general question then:

Do the CV shafts need to be changed if going from a manual to auto tranny or vice versa?

the CV's always seem to be listed as for either manual or auto otherwise.....

Also, what about Anti-lock brake system on the Aspires? I don't know if any Festys had this. Is it THAT critical? and what is the compatibility otherwise? will festy shafts work in Aspire trannys or vice versa? Are they the same length and do the ABS splines mean anything more than simply losing the ABS function?

    thanks in advance.:naka:

Manual and automatic axles are not interchangeable because the inner spline count is different.

Abs is solely an aspire ordeal, though it could be swapped into a Festiva with some nashing of teeth. The only difference between abs and non abs axles are the tone rings (manual and automatic rules still apply).

Aspire and Festiva axles will interchange within transmission types, but are different lengths per chassis.

What I'm mostly wondering I guess, specifically......

Last winter I bought some new CV axles, thinking the Aspire needed the wheel bearings done- along with some ball joints and tie rod lower control arms-

when the solution became merely brake pads- I still have these parts-

So I'm wondering if the CV joints would work if I had a Festiva manual tranny installed to replace my trashed one now?

Would the tranny ends be the same, and is the length the same otherwise.

I'm assuming an auto tranny would need another new set of CV axles than either the old ones or the replacements I have on hand, and I suppose it allmay be easier if I found an Aspire 5 speed most similar to my original '96. Correct?

I'm in no particular hurry, but would probably be interested in getting it repaired by next summer- a mechanic quoted me $400 to install a new tranny, sans the fluids. Sound reasonable?

Harp, the axles are chassis specific. ie Festy axles fit Festys,Aspire fit Aspire. So the Aspire axles are what you need to install a Festy tranny in an Aspire. With that being said I would NOT recommend you consider this option for two reasons. First its not just a tranny swap..... even though the trannys have the same look & design. They have very different mounting brackets. You need the cross member, trans & engine mounts from a Festy. But the biggest Con of this swap is the final drive ratio of the Festy Trans. I had this set up for @ 40k. I will never ever go back to it with a B3 engine. On the highway you constantly have to downshift to pass or go up big hills. On windy days with a head wind, the car was just a slug @ 65 mph. I didnt see any gain in MPG with the Festy trans. Once I went back to the correct final drive(Aspire). The car was much more pleasant to drive.
Some people like to read fiction,I prefer to read repair manuals. Weird I know-
