I used Halvoline on my last oil change. Didn't have any issues with it. Got it because it was on sale at the time at O'Reilly's!

i just got an oil change and used a fram filter, i will be changing that filter tomorrow asap.

For me. Just ignorance, I never considered doing the research to see if it is any good. I have an account with an oil testing lab, found favorable results and base my decision off of that. Supertech was not in my study.

I haven't heard of any oil related camshaft failures on fairly low spring pressure engines like ours. Flat tappet engines with a lot of non roller pressure on cam lobes need the extreme pressure rating zink provides.

I did a search on here and found no oil failures, Re-builder bulletins only mention installer related failures.

Heads like Matt is building may require zink, it would be interesting to hear his take on that.

You guys need to be thinking about ZDDP and can wear when running "normal" synthetics.

When these cars were built, regular oil had much higher levels that it currently has, like around 1200 PPM. Last I knew, most modern oils are only in the 600-800 PPM range. I believe most "high mileage" oils contain slightly higher levels. I know Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W-30 has some of the highest levels in a non-racing type oil. As I understand it, the Zinc and Phos get used up, so lower levels are sufficient as long as you change the oil often.

Mobil high mileage and a purolator any brand name. Mobil hm is the only oil that slowed the rear main leak. For the trans a mixture of Mercon, Mercon V and Lube Guard Red. When I put the 97 engine/ trans in it'll be MC 5w20 and Mercon V.

Dad has 230k on his 91 running Supertech for the last 150k.. No oil related problems.

If oils were always changed in time do we really need oil filters?

I'd like to do a sans stock filter with a bypass filter setup that would keep restriction low, but still filter really well. I read a post from a guy using one in his diesel and had his oil analyzed after so many miles. He said the additive levels were still fine after the usual time he'd have changed the oil/filter.

There was also a guy saying he'd had several analysis of oil that had gone 100K in a diesel and it was fine using a bypass filter setup.

People will laugh because (at least some of them I know) use a roll of toilet paper for the filter media, but funny or not it works and works VERY well.
