Yes unfortunately. Most spindle nuts aren't meant to be reused. Mine were trashed after being used once.

You can get another "life" out of the nuts by installing a washer under them. This makes them stop in a different place, giving you a clean piece to punch into the slot in the axle. The washer (of course) has to be a good, hard steel one of the correct size, not zinc plated crap from the hardware store.
